ice grippers

Does anyone have ideas to share on how to make something to attach to your boots or shoes that will keep you from slipping on the ice? I've seen a product advertized but even on sale it is very expensive so I thought I'd try the forum first.

I haven't tried this, but it should work. There is a product called "Grip tape." It comes on a roll just like duct tape and it is like sand paper on the non-sticky side. My hubby uses it on steps on vehicles. Just stick it on your cleaned boots and it should hold, then trim at the edge of the boot. Other than crampons, that's all I can think of. (Crampons are the spiky things mountain climbers strap on their boots to walk on icy terrain.) God bless,

What about bottle caps? I could have sworn I saw this once somewhere, but I have no idea how they would be attached to your boots.

expensive?? I got a pair for 1.99 use then alot,, have to watch or they slip off the toe of the boot. Velcro and bottle caps should work just as well

Ann, I used hex head sheet metal screws about 3/8 inch long and screwed then around the edges of the heel and put a couple in the middle. I also screwed them around the edge of the soles and put a few in the middle. Thick soled shoes or boots are best but if you're careful you should be able to put them on just about any type of shoes. Mine have rubber soles and when the screws are taken out you can't even tell that they've been there. They work great, don't cost much and are easy to install and remove.

About 2 kazillion years ago, when I was a young pup, we would attach bottle caps to pieces of bicycle tubes with what we called "swat rivets". A swat rivet was made of copper, and looked like a short roofing nail, with the shank cut in 2 lengthwise. We'd drill a hole in the tube and bottlecap, insert the rivet, spread the 2 prongs of the shaft, and "swat" it with a hammer, thereby marrying the rubber inner-tube to the bottlecap. We then tied the ends of the rubber tube over the tops of our shoes. Wasn't very hi-tech, but it worked, and all from throw-away stuff. Shame (most) kids today don't still live by the "depression attitude"!! GL!

Get an old pair of socks and pull them over the top of your boots. Works great but will stick a bit if ya stand still very long but it is a great way to use up those one of a kind sox.

Thank you all for your very helpful suggestions. I will definitely try one or more out until I find out which one works best for me. Unfortunately it took me this long to find my original question.
