APEX 703 3 Disc Changer Question

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Does anyone know if this player can play DVD's from different regions. I've got a friend who just got some DVDs from Hong Kong and would like to be able to play them on a DVD player. Thanks.

In theory the APEX 703 can play DVDs from different regions, but the firmware prevents you from accessing the menu option to change the region on the player. If you go to www.hanman.freeserve.co.uk/shinco/index.html you can get APEX 703 firmware that you can apply yourself to your APEX to give you access to this option. Please be aware that you are applying the firmware at your own risk and there is the possibility of ruining your APEX. There are at least 2 different firmware updates for APEX and you have to determine what chip your player has to know which update to use. You apply this firmware at your own risk. Most Hong Kong DVDs are not region protected and there is a good chance that your friend can watch his DVDs on the APEX without doing anything to the machine.

Thanks for the info. I give that a shot. By the way, if I were to install the firmware (which if anything would be a last resort), how would I go about doing so. Has anybody tried and encountered any problems (minor or severe)?

If you go to the web site I listed in my previous message and download the firmware, there is a README file on it. Basically you have to burn a CD-R in the manner described in the README file with the firmware on it. You start up your Apex with the firmware CD in it and you have the option to quit or continue and update your firmware. I can not emphasize enough that you must be absolutely sure which firmware your player has and get the right update for it or you will ruin your player. The web site I listed has a lot more info on the subject.
