Well, I hope this is some kind of help to you? It may get to you after the fact, but at least for the sake of conversation, allow me to give my opinion. I stumbled upon your request, while doing a search for information on artists in literature and the painting world who led tragic lifes, because of a debate that I am having with a female friend of mine. We saw the movie Pollock last night, about the famous, "SPLATTER"- style artist that led a tragic life of drinking and emotional pain and I made the statement that it is a similar story of a lot if not all artists, to have led and that lead tragic existences. My friend became almost irate that I would suggestsuch a thing, and I was shocked, because I believed that I had made a not only valid statement but a well known, factual statement. So, I set out to research the issue, so tonight when I see her at my friends Birthday party I will have hardcopy research material to hand her. Edgar Alan led a life I believe somewhat normal, for his time, compared to his peers, because he was a man of wealth, so he enjoyed a comfortable life. I believe that the person named "Leonore" made reference to in the poem THE RAVEN was actually a lover or wife that had met and untimly demise. At the time, drugs like opium and absenth were commonly used and had been for centuries of course, but Edgar shared the same passion for these drugs as many of the artists and writers of that time did. So, it would be my estimation that his loss, placed him in a state of mental instability and drug abuse, whose only outlet and release came from his writing. Take care, hope I helped and feel free to contact me if you wish!
