Missing a couple up front but we are Harper, Griffin Goma, Hughes, Barton, Solano, Acuna, Speed, Bassedasm (Dyer, Ameobi?) I Think.

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

It is Dyer and Ameobi upfront, and Villa are fielding:

James, Wright, Barry, Staunton, Southgate, Samuel, Stone, Ginola, Boateng, Mewrson, Dublin,

Do you really have to have a name that starts with an S to get into their central midfileld?

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Hi all! Gareth Barry in central midfield- bizarre!

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Evening Pete.

Teams just come out

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Villa kicking off, Toon attacking the Gallowgate end

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Hey how come theres no webcast???

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

It would appear Limey, that the Sweet F.A. has declined (refused) permission for the webcast. No doubt to do with TV rights etc.

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Not allowed by FA Rules Limey.......

Not much happening so far, but the pitch in the middle of the field looks very bare of grass, considering it hasn't been played on for a week or more!

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Thanks Pete in Canada :o) Well that sucks,we just rushed back from the supermarket to tune in on time and theres no webcast, what a pisser!! Oh well I'll just have to keeps tabs here then and beg for scraps of info!! Cheers Limey in Tampa.

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Griff started well. Is it me or are there a few empty seats?

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Five minutes gone, fi4rst real shot on goal by Merson.

Ginola getting barracked everytime he gets near the ball......

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Howay then - what's yer predictions for half- and full-time?

I'll go 0-0 and 2-1

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Good interplay by the Toon ball eventually out to Dyer who crossed neatly from the by line and James flapped it over the top but the linesman on the nearside reckioned it was out of play for a goal kick before Dyer crossed.......another blind tosser

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

9 minutes: Brilliant save by Harper from a Dublin header.....whoooooo

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

I was at the match v Villa at their place a few weeks ago, and this looks pretty much like its following the same pattern....

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

So was I Nick, and was reckoning much the same.

Both teams doing reasonably well without being brilliant....yet

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Hey guys, try this link, it's ITV (sorry Ken) and click on matchtracker live, something to look at while waitinfg for updates.

http://www.itv-football.co.uk/

Sorry can't do the linky thingy

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Dull start to game- Villa asking all the questions.

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Free Kick on the edge of the area, played in and glanced wide by Goma

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Hi all, anyone know when will the 4th round draw take place?

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Great break down the left.....Toon taking a bit more control....20 minutes gone

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Straight after our game Gilbert......about 5.45

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Not sure Gilbert, but let's get through the 3rd round first.

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Ameobi missed a 'sitter' Ball played in from the right byt Basedas but instead of trying to hammer it into the net he tried a step over knock back to Dyer, but he wasn't there

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Dyer is tryng to make this game far too complicated. Ameobi played the ball to him and he tried to beat three men beofr going for the shot......then got squeezed out of the way.

The resultant corner saw Bartion hit a 20 yarder on his left.....desperate or what

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Griffin booked for clattering Ginola.....Ginola still limping.

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Speed struggling with an injury.....may have to be subtituted

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Speed off......Cordone coming on

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

assume then Ken that Dyer will drop back and Cordone up front with the youngun???

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Great change of passes by Bassedas and Solano then put Dyer free.....James came 15 yards out of his area to make the tackle....

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

It hasn't happened that way yet, but it would be favourite.....Dyer still up with Ameobi and Cordone slightly behind, but I would see that changing quite soon.

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Speed not so much injured as having a touch of the squirts apparently!

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Alan Wright booked for a fould on Nobby

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Half Time 0-0

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Boring as shit or what?!

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Thanks Ken...looking forward to the second half. According to the ITV site it's pi$$ing down at the ground. Sounds like a pretty close game , the majority in the midfield area. Only four offsides in the first half.

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Having said that, on this occasion I can live with boring as shit if we scrape it...

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

The mancs gone home! He said he was falling asleep

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Agree Nick - Stolen (borrowed) from the live matchday ITV site:

"45' Samuel lobs the ball into the stand under no real pressure which sums up this half Half time whistle We apologise for the sense that nothing of any interest is happening in this game which is the responsibility of the two sets of players on the pitch"

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Quite a dull game with both sides seemingly apprehensive about this big game. Villa had the better of the 1st 15 mins then we came back strong for 15- scrappy +even since then. Bizarre formation for us since Speed went off feeling the effects of a virus. Couple of good chances for both sides- Harper made a good save from Dublin and Dyer cud have got a shot in but dwelled on the ball unecessarily. Griffin doing an excellent job on Ginola and the crowd are really rattling him- weve nobody on the left side and this is allowing Villa to get well down the right with Stone+Merson. Unremarkable performances from everyone apart from Grifffin, especialy Barton who continues to hoof aimless balls upfield.

We desparately need to move up 2 gears 2nd half though Im worried about fatigue from the 4 games over the last 2 weeks(with the same team). I presume YBR has kept Glass to come on as a sub later against tired legs.

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Pretty much a 50/50 first half.

Villa started the brigter and made some good moves culminating in a Dublin header that Harper saved brilliantly almost iside his right hand post.

The Toon then started to get the edge and moved ionto another gear. This culminated in a couple of good chances, the first coming when Ameobi should have shot but elected to try a step over pass to Dyer, but unfortunately Dyer hadn't moved into the space and the ball ran away to no one.

A couple of minutes later, Ameobi again played the ball to Dyer, but instead of blasting in a shot, he tried to twist and turn to beat a couple of players to make it look better but he was pushed further and further away and the shot, when it cam, bounced of Southgate and went off for a corner.

The last ten minutes of the half tended to become very sterile and neither side seemed to want to go forward.

Griffin has been booked for clattering Ginola, who seems to be very wound up, but to who or what is difficult to tell. Speed signalled twice to the bench and was then taken off and was replaced by Cordone. It later transpired that he had reported this morning with a virus, and was uncomfortable with a touch of the squirts.

Smith(?) was booked late oin for a foul on Solano.

And that in a shell was the first half......it can only get better in the second half.

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Light weights in midfield against their aggression. Nowt up front that will trouble them. My fear is they will be the ones to step up a gear. Poor game- but Dyer should have scored.

Not hopeful in Ramsgate

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Morning from Canberra

4:00 am here and just watched the first half. A pretty ordinary display from both sides. Our best chance fell to Dyer. He just wouldn't shoot!!

We were getting muscled off the ball early on but improved slightly as the half progressed.

Anyway that's all I can really remember (It is 4:00 am afterall)

Im sure others will have more to say.

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Ooo - Des Lynam a bit sarcastic there - went off to a commercial break with a pithy 'join us for the exciting second half'

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

It has to be said that the pattern in pretty much the same as it was at Villa Park a few weeks ago, the difference being, they didn't score after four minutes........a case of dejavu or what

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

ITK - don't mind as long as Nobby gets a goal like he did at Villa...

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Typical that they won't let us have the webcast - slime.

Thanks for your report.

L

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Quick chat in the tunnel, Rob Lee reckons he can't see anyone scoring and that Speed will be badly missed in the second half.

He l;ike the way that Griffin has got the better of Ginola and feels that Dyer is slightly restricted at the moment.

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Here we go. Second half

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Official crowd 37,372.

No significant changes in shape from wither team in the second half

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Crowd the biggest of the cup weekend

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

I can just manage to get very bad reception of Radio 5 and Talk Sport Radio here. Talk Sport the better bet - at least it doesn't have the awful Alan Green. He and Mark Lawrenson were both predicting 0-0 before it started and sounded delighted that it was staying that way as the game went on. As if they really were hoping for a bad game so they don't need to re-write their ready made end of match "boring, two poor teams" summaries

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

We have started the second half the better but we still don't seem to have any real bite.

HAWWAY LADS

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Crowd in good voice even if not near capacity - maybe because more of the seats have non-regulars in them this afternoon?

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

It's odd how watching the ITV matchtracker makes me think I am playing championship manager.

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Steve Stone 1-0

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

sorry I'm late... not going well eh?

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

we have already used one, but the other two wouldn't be amiss. I would like to see Glass on sonner rather than later

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

It could be worse - i could have gone down the Duke this morning in the bloody snow and paid ten bucks to watch this crap - that is if someone had bothered to get the TV rights.

Bring on Lua Lua - at least he's fun to watch

Hummph!

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Ameobi hits the post!

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Ameobi hit the bottom of the post......the only player worthy of wearing the shirt at the moment, the rest are frigging crap!

Don't know who the captian is now?

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Oohhh Wozza won't be happy... who got the Captains armband, or did he throw it down like Rob Lee did a few weeks ago?

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

where the heck YKD???

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Is it really this boring, even ITV hasn't updated in five minutes?

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

apparently Boateng still holding his knee

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Does that mean he's holding BOTH knees now, not suprised he fell ower.

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

come on lads...let's have a winner......

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Sounds like an entertaining Second Half. Can we save ourselves a trip to Villa Park a week on Wednesday? Let's do it. 3 minutes to go?

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

A lot more spirit but the passing is still piss poor

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Who's this idiot on the ITV site? e.g.

"Staunton corner met by Dublin who rises like a salmon and heads over the bar with the goal at his mercy"

What a prat - no doubt it's some failed screenwriter.

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Now a near miss in our area. End to end

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Free kick for us to right of pen area

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

We will miss Nobby & Dyer in the replay trip??

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

It could have been a lot worse. Thank you lads for your match reports. Those of us far from civilisation are much obliged. Be seeing you next Wednesday then - unless the TV rights are sorted out.

How about that Solano then?

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

Well it certainly is better than 0-1. we'll just have to do it the hard way...at Villa Park, probably no Dyer and maybe no Nobby, they may be suspended. Thanks ITK for the updates and thanks everyone for the company. Looking forward to match reports from those that saw the match.

Pete

maybe Gallacher will be back....pray for Cort.....

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

G,night all. Off to the pit

Secon half report:

Newcastle started the better of the side, but it was all for nothing when Stone connected with a Barry cross in the 55th minute and gave Harper no chance. Therere was a suggestion of offside to the move, but it would be churlish to deny Stone the goal.

Villa then seemed to think they had done all but enough and just about packed ten of their eleven players into their own half of the field with only Dublin left forward.

Instead of trying to go round the outsides, Newcastle continued to push through the middle, and move after move broke down due to poor passing.

The Toon won a free kick 25 yards out on the 79th minute and Nobby played the ball neatly out toward Glass on the left. His class ball into the area was headed out and Nobby came screaming in and bulleted a shot into the back of the net to make it 1-1.

Newcastle finished the game on the front foot and on the attack, but a 1-1 draw and replay a week on Wednesday was probably the best result.

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

1-1...even +crap game but I think both sides were tired after a gruelling Xmas program- unfortunately our squad didnt allow us options for fresh legs this match. Most interesting was Glasses excellent distribution from left back, in total contrast to Bartons. Dyer made occasional very good runs but was caught up in the horrible tangle in midfield. Cordone is of no use to us whatsoever. Lua has lots to learn and we desparately need another striker. MOTM= Goma for me. At least if he dosent stay, well get at least 5 million for him.

-- Anonymous, January 07, 2001

And after we wallop Villa it's Leicester coming to St James for a good drubbing.
