Magneto of X-men fame, at least when well told. I understand him. He saw his family die because they were different; he has no reason to believe the same will not happen again to mutants. (In fact, I share his worry.) Besides, he is a gentleman and a hero when circumstances allow, easily straddling the divide between the good and the bad.

The most interesting "villain" in comics right now is probably Shade, from Starman.

The best in recent years might be Darth Vader, because he was constructed with characteristics taken from *two* great comic book villains, Dr. Doom and Darkseid.

But the scariest is Sauron, because we don't see him.
