How can I tell the Canon 28-70 3.5-4.5 I from the Canon 28-70 3.5-4.5 II (Autofocus)

How can I tell one from the other? I know that the box of the version II would have "II" printed on the outside. But on the lens, it doesn't have this "II". Can someone give me some advice? Thanks.

Thang,

My 28-70 f/3.5-4.5, purchased in 1989 has the annotation "II" on the actual lens. I have several books written in Japanese, that show pictures of the the lens, and the "II" is clearly there.

Based on the introduction of the EOS 650 and 620, and the date of my version II lens, I don't believe the first version was on the market very long... maybe a year. My lens was a part of a kit from Canon for the EOS 630, which came out shortly after the introduction of the EOS line.
