"I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country...Corporations have been enthroned, an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money-power of the country will endeavor to prolong it's reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until the wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed."

Back to Turtledove. In his alternate history, Abraham Lincoln becomes a leader of the Socialist Party. To support this, Turtledove claims that all of the speeches performed by Lincoln in the book were taken from things that Lincoln had actually said while he was alive -- such as the comment above.

It's a side of Lincoln of which most Americans are utterly unaware.

Cherri, A quote I have seen before. Power tends to corrupt whenever it is vested in the hands of a few, whether that "few" be the federal government, state government, corporations, or political parties. Corporations have always had strong power, but IMHO even more power has shifted toward the Corporations in the last few years, and there appears to be no such thing as Anti-trust laws anymore. So now, the threat is not so much "Big Brother", but "Corperica."
