Another tax saving opportunity

greenspun.com : LUSENET : I-695 Thirty Dollar License Tab Initiative : One Thread

Hey everyone! This year, student governments from colleges across the state are approaching legislatures to pass a bill which would make textbooks tax-exempt. We need some support. This is not a new idea, around 17 states have a similar bill, with many more looking into it. This bill also was shot down in 1997. It's time we let our legislators know that college students need help. The amount of tax a student spends on textbooks in one year can be over $100, with student with low income, this can mean the difference between attending school or not. Help further higher ed. and contact your legislators and let them know it's time to support students!

Short answer: No.

We, as tax payers, don'6t "owe" you any tax break. We are spending hundreds of millions of dollars to put you all through college as it is. There are no grounds for this tax break, and I will insure that my legislators know my feelings, and urge them to oppose this.

And we would say, why should we have to pay taxes on education?

But then, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'm just glad you have not received a college education, especially from a 4-year institute in this great state of Washington. God bless.

"And we would say, why should we have to pay taxes on education? "

Probably for the same reason that WE pay taxes to support your education.

Because it is in our common interest to do so.

If YOU were unwilling to pay taxes to support YOUR education, why on earth should I be willing to pay taxes to support YOUR education?

If you are not deriving at least as much advantage from being educated as I am from subsidizing your education, you ought to quit school and find a job. If you are deriving significant advantage from being educated, I don't see your gripe with paying part of the cost.

Have you been taking entitlement lessons from Matthew?

Oh yeah-

God bless.

Brian regales us thusly:

"But then, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'm just glad you have not received a college education, especially from a 4-year institute in this great state of Washington. God bless."

Without going into the issue of your "gladness" that I did not receive a degree from one of our 4 year institutions:

The folks at the UDub ('81) and Eastern ('82) would be disappointed to hear that, and wonder, in fact, exactly who the hell was using my name there.
