Laugh at the Freak!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Hedgehog Talk : One Thread

I am sometimes worried about people laughing at me on the street, but that is mostly because of being so big, and sometimes I think that people are making fun of me. The purple hair, though, I don't think looks silly and I am not afraid of being laughed at--and if they do laugh, I think that it would be good-natured.

Do you avoid doing things for fear of looking silly?

Luckily, I don't have that problem all the time, but it's funny how it works in extremes. My friends and I once put on an impromptu show about a mute androgynous accordion player (pictures are located somewhere in the ft archives) in a grocery store here. I was prancing around with an accordion on my back looking like a complete moron, but I didn't care at all. I can do stuff like that ten times over, but I can walk around in public and fret about a bunch of little things like whether my sweater looks dorky. Once again, it doesn't happen all the time, though. I find that those of us who tend to live in little dreamworlds can deal with this problem since we think we live in a movie and it's just all part of our CHARACTER.

I try not to take myself too seriously. I live about six blocks from three different colleges, and everywhere I go in my neighborhood I'm surrounded by trendy, young, hip college students.

I could wear blue jeans and a t-shirt and still think that they're giggling about the way I look. So, I figure I don't have a lot to lose.

One year, back when I was in college, I was playing in a brass quintet that had a lot of gigs in the Bay Area. One night, after a concert, I went out for coffee with my girlfriend. She looked a little uncomfortable, and I asked what was wrong. She said, "It's Saturday night, we're on Telegraph Avenue, and you're wearing a tuxedo!"

I haven't gone so far as to make snow angels in the front yard, but I do wear a jester's hat in winter (hey, it's made of polar fleece; bite me).

No, not at all. In fact, I shoot for that. I like to be silly. I hope I can stay this way forever. I'd hate to think it was "ridiculous" to act the way I do.

I expect my children sometimes wish I would avoid dancing in the grocery and singing to the 60's songs I know....on the other hand when I wore my flashing reindeer nose and antlers to the 15 year old's bowling game, they all clapped. Most of the 15 year old's friends have pronounced me "cool" so I get along....the 11 year old mostly ignores me which also works. And when they annoy me, I gimp along behind them like the hunchback and drool--other moms take note! Doing this can really work as a major threat the next time your teen pushes your buttons in public!!
