I had to wear them when I had surgery...I think they help with the circulation in your legs. Didn't they look great :-)

They are called "TED hose" - they are indeed anti-embolism stockings. They are elastic stockings with graduated pressure from the toes up the leg thich help to keep the pt. from developing clots as a post-op complication. The clot could break lose from blood that pools in the legs and travel elsewhere causing a life-threatening complication - esp. if they travel to lung or heart. The pressure of the stockings keeps the blood from pooling and assits with venous return of blood, something that the leg muscles normally do - but if a pt. is confined to bed won't happen. They are normally removed once the pt. is up and moving.

Another question about Mark's surgery...I didn't want to start a new post. Anyway, I thought it was odd that he just met his anesthesiologist (sp?) when he was wheeled into surgery. For a major surgery like that you would think they would have met before and the anesthesiologist would have told Mark what to expect especially since he would be wakened up during the procedure. Plus, with Mark and Elizabeth both being doctors it seemed they would have wanted to meet him. The only times I have had surgery the anes. came in well prior to my surgery and especially with my c-section he explained exactly what he would be doing, etc. I thought it was strange. Anybody else?

Amanda- That is not unusual to meet the anthesiologist right before a regular surgery. But I have to agree that considering the seriosness of this type of surgery He should of met way before that. I've had several surgeries where I've met the anthes. right before I went into the OR.

My mother told me that all 3 times, she did met the anesthesia guy and he did explain what was going to happen, like you said...I thought they only skipped that when it was an emergency procedure and you werent awake...
