Home Championship

Listening to Sporting Questions on 5Live in Northern Ireland yesterday. The audience were bemoaning the fact that there the Home Championship is no more. Apparently there are moves to try and reinstall it, but mnost people think the English team will 'poo poo' it. I used to live that tournament. Particularly the England/Scotland game. They cancel these things because of money and what have you, but isn't it what fans want to watch? Any thoughts anyone?

I agree Beardo. A sad day when it was abolished. However, I think the reason was partly the increased number of games per season, plus the increase in club power who didn't want their prize assets playing "unimportant" matches.

I'd vote for it's re-instatement.

Couldn't it be a 'B' international competition. So that young and up and comning players could get valuable international experience. I'm sure it would be very useful for the likes of Cole at West Ham and Brown at Man U. Not forgetting Griffin and Caldwell.

I think it was bad for the international game that it was scrapped. It was a competitive event and these are always preferable to meaningless friendlies where the two countries don't compete for fear of showing their hands before an important European or WC game.

Having said that, if it is reintroduced, I dread to think what the mindless, racist thug element which attaches itself to England, will do for the unity of the UK.

I like the idea of making it a sort of B international type fixture - its what it would end up like anyway as all the big teams are bound to pull their own players out. Or perhaps they should just do it once every 2 or 4 years or something

Sometimes I feel my football-watching is directed towards things I am not really interested in. i.e. aimless friendlies against Brazil or Italy, or endless and boring Europe competitions. I still prefer the blood and guts of a game v Scotland, and given me a game vs Sunderland or Liverpool (rather than Slovan Bratislava or whoever) any day of the week.

The trail of destruction left by English hooligans between Glasgow Central Station and Hampden Park was still talked about years later when I lived there.
