FA Cup - Round 40

This is where I came in ...

This weekend, January 6th is the 39th anniversary of my first match at SJP, the FA cup 3rd round match at home to Peterbro, season 61/62, so Sunday's game will be the start of my 40th FA Cup campaign. As I have related recently, the game was a most unsuccessful start to my Toon career as the lads bowed out to the new members of the Fooball League 1-0 with Terry Bly getting the goal. Team was Hollins, McKinney, Ferguson, Wright, Thompson, Dalton, White, Harrower, McGuigan, Allchurch, Tuohy.

The following season we went out in R4 after two away ties so my second FA cup match was not till 63/64 - round 3 at home to - Bedford. A 2-1 defeat at home to a non-league side. It was to be another 10 years before we did so much as advance beyond the 4th round, although we made up for that by at least reaching the final that year in 74. Indeed, looking at the record book, I am alarmed to note that 1974 was the first time I ever attended an FA cup match which we actually won(!!!) (West Brom 3-0) and the first time I saw us win in the Cup at SJP was the 4-3 against Forest subsequently annulled by the FA.

I don't know - maybe it's all my fault. :-) I have to say I'm reassured that we are up against a Premier side on Sunday as I have seen far too many embarrasments against "lower" opposition.

Fortieth Time Lucky? I still dream ...

Blimey, I thought I was long-suffering! Hendon at StJames' was my debut sometime during the early '70's. If I remember rightly I think it took us a couple of games to dispose of them (think Stevenage without the objectionable Chairman). First ever away game; Semi-final against Burnley at Hillsborough in '74, a double for Supermac, happy days!

I remember the Hendon games well. For some reason i had to listen to them with my uncle in his Austin Allegro, parked in the garage, engine running(!) to keep us warm. Aunty Fran brought us out a cup of tea when 'her telly' finished. First away cup match 4th round at Sheff United '76. Marvelled at the fantastic songs we had "We'll see you all outside..." "Go left" etc all had a lovely tune, and the chant of "Grecian 2000!" at that famous-Sheff-U.-player-who-I-can't-remember-who-had-a-full-he ad-of-grey-hair, and watching the fattest geordie I had ever seen (seen many more since then) take on 7 coppers and a dog on the cinder track in front of our section, a struggle that lasted at least ten minutes until the boys in blue tried to subdue him by stripping him naked (all but for his tan polyester tango briefs) before the hero gave up - dog too near knackers, an arse full of gravel rash and all the travelling support screaming to see the full monty. But at my first match at SJP I was hoyed out by the cops before half-time. It was the first match of the season after returning to the top division in '65, but I cried my eyes out for a full 30 minutes, inconsolable I was. It was then that all the gadgies around us told me dad he was daft to bring a 9 month old baby to the match, even if it was a special occasion, and then a copper joined in and told him he should take me home.

Happy days, but I'm still dreaming too....

Was he called Woodward shagga?

I was one of the unfortunates with Jonno at the Bedford game - it just couldn't happen, but it bloody well did!

Arguably even worse was the famous Hereford defeat as it was shown on telly, and we've had to suffer that bloody long-range shot going past Iam McFaul ever since.

Got to agree with Jonno - thank the sweet Lord we're playing PL opposition on Sunday - too many bitter memories of sundry humiliations!

Woodward! That's the fella!

My first game was on my friends 5th birthday, early seventies, at home to QPR. We lost 2-1 supermac missed a penalty and it was pissing down rain.

Anyone know of a website I can look up old results so I can pinpoint the exact date?

Not my first match...but almost the last.

FA Cup 3rd Round Jan 1968 Newcastle 0 Carlisle 1 Wyn Davies fouled. Ollie Burton missed pen. Peanuts no consolation.

First taste of very unexpected home defeat. Going home, fed up, vowed never to go to SJP again (Wuz very young). But then...

And talking of THE Cup. I know we all have that dream of being there when the lads finally win the FA Cup for the first time in most? of our lifetimes. I, for one, would die happy the next day...although the hangover would probably take care of that anyway. But does anyone's dream include a trip to Cardiff? On the other hand - would it matter where it happened?

Well benton, it's not in London so I suppose we might just have a chance!

Benton

Ah yes Carlisle at home - surely we couldn't lose to lower division opposition again. I can still remember how utterly sick I felt after that game. By the time Hereford came along in 71/72 I took it my stride - if you keep getting beaten severely about the head eventually you just stop feeling it!

Syme

The game you seek seems to be Apr 3, 1976 1-2 (Gowling).

Jonno, have one on me this week-end , walk tall , your a top Geordie.

** I realise its 4 in the morning, I agree that I have my confused at times"moments" but when reading this thread my whole body went off- line and I started to reminence, cup ties / finals attended , then I had this vision of Aul Softie looking out of the bedroom window , cradling in his arms `Young Softie`, a full moon over The Temple of St James , and he utters the immortal words later plaguerised by Del- Boy,......THIS COULD BE OUR YEAR , YES THIS IS OUR YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jonno/Clarky or any Statto, Why do I have this feeling that in far off days, Newcastle had a consistent policy of buying?. I refer to the fact that after a cup-tie , usually against a team of lower status if the result did not favour the toon, which invariably it did not, the directors at the time to appease the fans would buy said teams star player , no matter what division. Gentleman I give you in his entirety, one Arthur Bottom of York City, scorer of many goals in old 3rd div North, strong player(could plough thro the mud), I am sure and will remember more, Len White came by that route, did Toon play Galaxy`s lot once in cup?, and cast iron Tommy Casey arrived on scene?

**Screach, mind that Davy Hilly poser, Jonno may have solved it with Liam 2wee , above, aint that him on the photo, o/l balding.

Nah Buff. Wasn't Tuhoy either. Seardched high and low over Christmas/New Year but couldn't find the bliddy poster. I was really disappointed. Will try again this w/e if I'm sober enough.

Just remembered - Ronnie Radford was the Hereford player who scored that screamer against us for Hereford on an absolute mud-heap of a pitch.
Shown every bloody year by the BBC at FAC 3rd or 4th Round stage - just to remind and upset us poor auld Geordies.

Well thanks for that Clarky - not. You must be the only one who'd forgotten it! :-)
