Player of the season so far: quick poll

Who do you think? I'm going for Super Aaron Hughes on basis of bravery, consistency, improving with every game and having kept us in one or two games (remember Chelsea? Had JF Hasselbaink in his pocket). I'd put Nobby and Dyer joint second. You lot?

Acuna for fitting in so quickly and getting better with every game.

1- Nobby
2- Dyer
3- Shearer

Gary Speed without a doubt has made the transition of Bassedas and Acuna so much easier and has softened the blow of losing a recognised striker partnership.

Think Gary Speed is up there - had actually forgotten about him.

Most of the talk has been about other individuals like Shearer, Dyer, Acuna and Bassedas, and is justifiable.

Meanwhile in this hard time in respect of injuries Speed has been there putting himself about in midfield and getting himself a bit of a reputation as a hard man who scores a few goals. Without him this year we would have been suffering far more than we have been.

I'd go for Acuna too, he looks an absolute bargain for a million squid.

Speed, Nobby, Dyer (coming up fast and will win this by a mile if he keeps up recent form) and Hughes.

Hughes , Dyer , Acuna .

Shay Given by about 18 points. When all else fell to pieces ahead of him he did his job time and again.

Griffin worth a mention too.

Speed, Nobby, Given, Hughes.......CHARVET!

Aaron Hughes just shades Gary Speed for me.

It occurs to me that TSM showed rare intuition and foresaw Aaron rising to greatness by having him debut in the Nou Camp - hardly known for that sort of gesture, was he? My biggest fear is that having raised our first successful youth graduate for years, we'll go and flog him when we should hold on to him for his whole career.

Can't see us selling him Dougal. He'll stay as long as the club want him and thankfully he is so under-rated by outsiders that I can't see any other Premiership club coming in for him, that he would move to.

>>>>>TSM showed rare intuition and foresaw Aaron rising to greatness by having him debut in the Nou Camp

Well he is a defender so he had an unfair advantage under that regime ...

By all accounts he loves the Toon and I am told he met his girlfriend at SJP (taste or what?) so I imagine he would be happy to stay but if he does get a higher profile, I could see us flogging him. Which would be shameful - he should be a club captain and have a testimonila etc.

Jonno, LOL. Slightly off the point but, while Aaron is best as a centre back, he did roam forward while right/leftbacking last season and got/created a couple of goals - could be another reason for our poor goal tally this season. Bless him - did you see his face after hitting the bar against Man United (a game for which he rightly got MOTM) - had to lie down to get over it.

Nobby is my numero Uno, followed by Aaron Hughes and Kieron Dyer. Acuna is my player of the month for December and might get into the top three by the end of the season, then again so might Harper if he gets a long run in the team.

Hughes, Speed, Given - Dyer slips out of the top three following is stupid sending off. Says a lot about our season when hardly anyone is plumping for Shearer or any other forwards (as if we had any other forwards that is)

Hughes Goma (despite the fact he wants to bugger off) Speed

Dyer and Solano both need a bit more consistency

Hughes, Speed and Acuna. I think Bassedass is going to get better and better. Also a little late shout for Shola - so far.

-- Anonymous, January 05, 2001

Watch out for a chorus of "We all agree Aaron is better than Rio" at Elland Road.

I can't decide on one so in no particular order Given, Speed & Hughes with late contenders being Acuna & Dyer.
