Commonwealth Bank computer system fails

Commonwealth Bank customers throughout Australia were unable to access their cash or credit today after the bank's computer system failed.

Customers were turned away by staff who apologised for the "technical difficulties" and asked people to "try again in a few hours".

ATMs and Eftpos machines throughout the country were also rejecting Commonwealth Bank cards, a customer service woman said.

The staff member was not sure what caused the crash but said she had been told the problem would be resolved within a few hours.

Comment was being sought from the bank's management who were meeting to discuss the problem.
