Match report: Aaron Hughes

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Our fans were brilliant and the players, subs and coaching staff to a man came to applaud us afterwards. However, what stucj out for me was Aaron Hughes's composure - he was about our only player who remained calm and collected and did his job. How good could the boy be with a decent centre back to learn from? World Class, IMHO.

Keegan would have won the league if Aaron had been onw of our centre halves. The first true defender NUFC have had since Frank Clark knew Jonno's dad

He never seems to get flustered about anything. Like a Swann furiously paddling under water but appearing to cruis gracefully down the river.

If only Goma would change his mind and be at this club for the next three-four years, these two could form a great partnership.

I would go into more detail but you've seen the incidents and they all happened across the pitch from where we were. However, Solano on fire til he got sent off, Ameobi did really well, Dyer wasn't in his game first half but could have won the game for us in the second half. Speed dug deep. Barton dug deep - panicked a bit, I thought, but led the applause as usual. Goma was great but was nowhere for Les Ferdinand's goal. Harper brilliant. Acuna and Bassedas were solid. Hughes stood out -awesome work rate, calm, passed well, was overjoyed when we scored. Sorry to harp on about him but it just seems to me that we have a wonderful little treasure in him: he is a great footballer and could be brilliant. He also appears to love the Toon (I have lost count of the reports I've heard about his kindness and general affability). Bear in mind that the other young defenders who are pulling up trees have all learnt from world class players themselves. Aaron has had a mediocre bunch to learn from at the very best. A genuine United hero has been born IMHO. Otherwise, Ricky Villa came on at half time. Has aged well. Their fans were crap throughout while, particularly in the second half, we were brilliant: they could probably hear us in St Albans. Only other thing of mote was that (Spurs-supporting) taxi driver to WHL was at school with Warren Barton and his missus and was full of praise but almost fainted as he didn't know that Wozza supported Arsenal. Allison and Screach were both on good form, too.

Not much else to add to the great reports from Dougal and Screach. It was heartwarming to see the lads really pull it together when we were down to 9 men. More so to see every one of them come over to applaud us afterwards. Harper even did the 'we're not worthy' bow and looked as if he wanted to personally shake the hand of every one of us in the stands. Shame about the officials ruining a decent game. Now to try to get my voice back by Sunday! *hackcough* ;-)
