Heavy bread

I use the bread machine to mix my bread. After it is punched down, I remove the dough and let it rise so I can bake it in a conventional oven. I bake the bread at 400 degrees for about 20 to 25 minutes. My bread always seems "heavy". Should I bake it longer? What am I doing wrong?
