By James D. Wolf Jr. Daily Herald Staff Writer Posted on December 30, 2000 The sound of a siren can still get people's attention, the Barrington-Inverness Police Department found out Friday.

When the city emergency siren was accidentally set off about 7 p.m., the police department received an estimated 50-75 calls, said service officer Toni Hervas.

The alarm sounded for about five minutes, but dispatchers did not know what had set it off.

Hervas said she did not know how far the siren's wail traveled, but the calls came mostly from the Barrington area.
