Cuba, China Sign Military Collaboration Agreement

HAVANA, Dec 28, 2000 -- (Agence France Presse) Top Cuban and Chinese military officials signed a military cooperation agreement here Wednesday, Cuban state television reported.

No details of the agreement were released. It was signed during a visit to the island by Chinese People's Liberation Army commander Fu Quanyou, who began his four-day visit Tuesday.

Armed forces chief of staff Alvaro Lopez Miera signed the document for Cuba.

Fu visited a tank unit and air base during the day, where he observed military exercises, according to a TV report.

Upon arrival, China's military representative told the local news agency Prensa Latina the visit was aimed at bringing relations between the two nation's military closer.

"We support and help each other, because we have the same objective -- to build socialism," Fu said. ((c) 2000 Agence France Presse)
