His poems were also based on his past experiences and all of the things he went through in his troubled life. Poe, as you may already know had a bad life due to the fact that he was orphaned by two mothers, who both died of tuberculosis, and rejected by two fathers. He used his writing ability as a form of self expression and to write down all of the things that he was going through or had already gone through in his life. The phrase "THE RED DEATH" refers to tuberculosis which he seen as the red death because of the way that red blood came out of the mouths of the victims of the disease. He also refers to tuberculosis as CONSUMPTION of the human.
