Where does a person pick up USGS maps?

You can do that online. Either via the terraserver website or the digital raster graphics. The latter requires downloading the tool to read the maps with, then figuring out where the maps are and downloading the maps. This can all be done from www.GisDataDepot.com

The readers are found at: http://software.geocomm.com/viewers/general/ I have the dlgv32. Don't know which version.

Maps for Iowa counties are at: http://www.gisdatadepot.com/catalog/US/61058/sublist.html from there go to the digital raster graphic 24K maps

And you won't get the full map, but you can print in sections around what you will need. Most orienteering maps are at a 1:15000 scale. Some are at 1:10000. But work with any map will help.

Online, you can also visit terraserver.com

Finally, you can get the big hard copies from your local USGS office... try the government pages in the phone book.

Another good on-line source is topozone (http://www.topozone.com). Topozone has a searchable database of USGS maps of the entire nation. You can print them out. The quality is not as high as if you download the DRG maps -- but it is a lot easier and quicker.

Terraserver includes both topo maps and a lot of aerial photographs. The photographs let you see a lot of detail beyond that shown on the USGS map. It can be interesting to print out a topo from topozone and the corresponding aerial photo from terraserver -- then explore an area with both of those maps in hand.

And there's always your local hunting store. If they don't have USGS maps, they'll know who does locally.
