beginning

I have never "orienteered". I have a lensatic compass but no topo maps. I am interested in (eventually) competing in foot/kayaking competitions. I am from Kansas and currently attending school in Dubuque, Iowa. Where would you reccommend beginning? Any information would be great. Thanks a lot.

Sincerely,

While many beginner's believe the compass is important, I've found all it can do is point north. :) So I think learning more about map reading and how to figure out where you are on the map and how you can use the information from the map to get you where you want to go. One thing you can do is to find so USGS maps of local parks and mark out a course from one 'easy' feature to another. Easy features would be things that are quite obvious, like road junctions. Then go out and hike the course you drew.
