Shade for Summitar?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I recently acquired a Summitar F2 for my IIIf. Other than the massive "barn door" shade is there another way to put a shade on this lens? I've only just started my "leica" voyage.

On the Summitar that I use to have for my 111G I could use any any of the hoods for an e39 50mm. I do not remember the hood number but I used clip on hoods from the Summicron collapsible and the later Summicron.

I've got an older, uncoated Summitar which instead of having a ring cut through the knurling around the front for the modern hood to clip into, has one solid knurled ring about 7mm deep. My modern hoods don't fit this one.

As esoteric as the Barndoor hood is, it has cutouts that don't obscure the RF or viewfinder. You might try a filter stepping ring to adapt to another diameter screw-in hood or clamp-on. A camera show or used equipment dealer might have a less expensive non-Leitz substitute.

What is the exact diameter in mm (outside measurement) of the front of the lens? I have a local source for many old series filter adapters and hoods, maybe one would work for you. You could also use the series filters with the same adapter/retaining ring. Let me know if you want me to look for one -the cost is negligeable (about $10.00 for the adapter ring and hood)
