Bridges, Huckerby, Harte...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Ronny talks about the availability of Bridges and the possibility of him coming at the end of the season - but surely if you were David O'Leary you'd get shot of Huckerby before Bridges, wouldn't you? Can't see them both leaving unless Leeds bring someone else in (apart from Keane I mean). Also, curiously, they talk about Ian Harte as being expendable but never suggest that BR might be interested. I would've thought that the more Domi piss-farts about, the more obvious a bid for Harte woudl be....?

Harte hasn't even made the bench in the last two games according to one website I read earlier in the week. I think we should be rushing to sign this decent player, who is British, well Eire anyway, and has an excellent free scoring record for a full back from free kicks and open play.

Bridges will probably want to move before Huckerby because he has more ambition and a much better chance of further international honours if he is playing regular 1st team football, which he would surely do for us. Phase Shearer out, phase Bridges in, very gradually.

Subject: Bridges, Huckerby, Harte...

rumor has it bobby met with the trio at a hotel in scotch corner last night. as he was about to sign them, he was temporarily distracted, and when he looked around they were gone.. gone

Why on earth would you want to phase Shearer out? Don't you fancy seeing a fully fit Alan Shearer and Micheal Bridges playing up front for us together? A dynamic Geordie duo.

Having three strikers like AS, CC and Bridges would give us all kinds of options - would be really excellent, at long last last.

Why on earth would you want to phase Shearer out?

31years old been playing top division football since he was 17 2 "career ending" injuries played non stop for 13 years when not injured played many games carrying "minor" injuries

how long do you really think he can keep going at a reasonable level? i reckon 3-4 years if he's used more sparingly (20-30 per season) finished in 2002 if not.

Providing they're all healthy at the same time. Or even 2 out of 3. ;-)

Woah hold on fellas. I appreciate Shearer as much as everyone else. I meant in the long term.

I don't think anyone would argue that in three years time we should be at a stage where we have a natural replacement for Shearer already at the club instead of signing someone when he calls it a day.

I totally agree we need 3-4 fully fit quality strikers to get anywhere in this league.

To be honest, I reckon at best Shearer has two more seasons left in him.
For Gods sake, let's give him the horsepower to finish the job he came home to do, before it's too late!

We gave him the 'horsepower' when Sir Les arrived at the club and look at the excellent scoring exploits, also to a much lesser extent when Ferguson was fit over the xmas period last year.

Plainly obvious he needs the support up front, baffling to understand why this is not a priority at the start of every season.

Fair enough we signed Cort but we should have had insurance against a Cort injury in the form of another striker capable of bruising defenders for Shearer.

Haven't we been talking about having enough coverage and depth since Tino left? The difference between us and the leaders is the ability to interchange at the drop of a hat and keep on rolling without breaking stride. We will never be back to that level unless the board sees fit to unload enough funds to make it so. That my friends is not going to happen anytime soon.

*note - can we compare Diego Cordone or Lomano Lua Lua with Solskjaer or Sheringham, or even Bergkamp or Kanu.... I think not....

Shearer's only thirty. Didn't we re sign pedro when he wa 32? If he is going to be fazed out it's likely to be in 4 years time by which time Michael Chopra will be just turning 21, ans Shola Ameobi will be a 23 year old England centre forward.

cheers Rik. Being only a couple of months younger than AS, i feel like i've got another five seasons left in me before the inevitable- hair faals oot. As AS has clearly got a head start on me in that one, i'd give him six more seasons ]at least before a permanent retirement. ; )

The problem is fellas that Shearer already has a 35 year old body through injuries and wear & tear.
