PA - Power outage hits Erie, Millcreek

About 2,600 homes and businesses in Millcreek Township and southwestern Erie were without electricity for up to an hour, starting Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

The outage, centered on West 33rd Street and Zuck Road, knocked out power from West 23rd to West 38th streets between Greengarden and Asbury roads. Some traffic signals went dark for a time.

Martin Grzasko, a GPU Energy spokesman, said most customers had power restored within 15 minutes and all were back in service by about 4:30 p.m.

A caller to Millcreek police said a cover blew off a manhole near West 33rd Street and Zuck Road. GPU Energy said overhead power lines go underground near there, and the outage probably was caused by a short circuit in the underground conduit.
