"It wasn't that he did not deserve to be on the substitutes bench but I had to think of other things. For instance, Alan Shearer's back could have gone after 30 minutes.

"It could have seized up or had one bad twist and we would have had to bring him off. That's why we needed Lomana Lua Lua on the bench and also Daniel Cordone in case we needed a front player later in the game.

"So young Caldwell was the one to suffer for this and really he did not deserve to be missing from our 16.

"But he's young and, while I did not have to, I explained it to him because I felt that he deserved an explanation."
