Striker & defender.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Hi all,

A quick word.

I told you all Saha was nifty. But no one listened.

Oh and Simon Colosimo, is available from Oz now. He is a right back, come central defender. is 22 and rated very highly down here. During the summer both Middlesborough and the Mackems tried to sign him, but he got lost between the stuff between both clubs and a dodgy agent.

Oh and for anyone who has tried, I'm not on my email address above, I just use it to talk on here.

Everyone have a good Christmas and happy new year.

Hi Tre! How ya` doin`? (:o)

Totally agree with you about Saha - we should have made the effort to keep him.

What you doing for Christmas then?(:o)

Marion Pahars

From Zoom Soccer - "Chelsea and Southampton are said to be in discussions over a possible swap deal involving Saints striker Marian Pahars and Blues“ midfielder Jody Morris.

Chelsea were believed to have made several inquiries about Pahars“ availability but were discouraged from following up their interest after being told that the Latvian star would cost around £8 million to sign".

At £8 million he's a snip - go get him Bobby!

Did Colosimo not have his leg broken by Andy Cole or something?

How about Des Walker as a stop-gap CB?
Presently rotting away at Sheff Wed, a vastly experienced international and sound character.
Would probably jump at the chance, and should be available for a reasonable fee. Could probably do a good job for 18 months for us, and help groom Aaron Hughes and the Caldwell brothers.
Just a thought.

Clarky NO !

Not as good as Stuart Pearce, or Steve Bould, for God's sake Sheff Wed player

And he didn't seem all that consistent from what I saw when Weds were still in the premiership and their matches were shown over here. Not that the handful of matches are alot to judge from but...

As for Pahars...hope someone from NUFC is on a plane to Southampton as I type!

I think Tre`s frightened of me - every time I reply to one of his threads - he disappears for six months! (:o)

Clarky, YES to Pahars, but NO to Walker

-- Anonymous, December 20, 2000

Dan, The Geordie Jew,

Sorry it took so long, I thought I would let Lonly Tune answer for Tre as he is always sticking his neb in.

Yes, Simon Colossimo did indeed have his leg broken by Cole. Note I did not say broke his leg in a tackle with Cole.

It was blatant thuggery by Cole.

We HAVE to sign a CB, and soon. It seems likely that we'll sign Pablo Paz as soon as some brass is available, possibly as a replacement for either Marcelino or Goma - however, at 5'8" he doesn't sound like the commanding Centre Half that we really need.

Personally, I'd like to see an experienced CB, like Des Walker - despite the reservations on here - come in as a stop-gap, and in addition I'd just tell Goma that he can't be released until the end of the season - like it or bloody lump it.

Walker has looked brilliant this season and, let's face it, has pedigree. On the other hand, all this panic-buying of old players is a depressing spectacle.

Clarky - you should get a spill chocker. I think you really meant to say Goma should like it or bloody limp it.

-- Anonymous, December 20, 2000

Goma can go if we get the money. No point in keeping him here when he wants to be elsewhere. We'd only have to buy somebody in the summer then wait till he fits into the side, for the first half of next season.

Planetfootball have again linked us with Faber from PSV. I'm not at all keen on that Pablo bloke 5'8" is simply not tall enough.

I'd only agree with you DB if we had a replacement in place for Goma.
The last couple of weeks have shown us all too clearly how difficult it is to get quality players in during the season.

Goma is our best CB, and flogging him right now without a replacement being in place would be plain daft.
I wouldn't be telling him he had to stay indefinitely, only until May - he's a professional who willingly signed a contract, he should understand that and accept it. I think he would.

Well, Gusset, when you have a neb as big as mine it gets kind of hard keeping it out of places.

Re. Colosimo - I have to say, Tre, that he's still largely unproven IMO. I still say Hayden Foxe would have been a great signing. With the emphasis on WOULD - just ask WHam !!

-- Anonymous, December 20, 2000

I have it on fairly good authority that Paz is quite some player and is very highly rated. Despite his lack of inches. I'm heading for the door, coat in hand.

-- Anonymous, December 21, 2000

Paz may be highly rated where he is playing at the minute but I would say that at 5'8" he hasn't got the physical capability to make it in the Premiership. Hughes needs a man of Goma's stature alongside him, not someone smaller than him, look at the way he gels with Goma.

I may be proved wrong but I go with my gut feeling that his signing would be a disaster.

A team of giants can accomodate the odd player who is vertically challenged. However, we are already a team of midgets (relatively speaking) that occasionally gets muscled out of it - I would have thought the last thing we want is another, especially at the back, however talented he is.

Of the centre back targets we are supposed to be interested in, none fill me with great confidence.

Faber from PSV has just come back from a very serious knee injury and Paz is too short for this league.

Chris Morgan from Barnsley is a good young prospect but I can't see the benefit of signing him when we have Caldwell.

Who else is there?
