DVD for the Consumer

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

As a result of "playing" with the SpruceUp DVD authoring Software (full version) in the last week some ideas have now formulated and as a result my DVD web page has changed in name and content (to the title of this post).

I have some questions which I hope might be answered or commented on by experienced people who read the postings on this and other sites.

1) What are the current limitations for DVD-R media as related to playing. Will DVD players sush as the Pioneer 525, 535, Apex 600, Philips 725, 711 actually read DVD-R media or is a special breed required to do that?

2) are there individuals or companies out there on this planet prepared to accept DVD compliant MPEG2 files on CD-R media and author the DVD from the provided data? If there are, I would like to create a register of url's and or email addresses on my site for that service. A process to achieve that is being written up at the moment for inclusion on the site. "Hands on" based, up to the point of the DVD-R burn for which I do not have information or any skill at.

Thanks

Hey Ross, from things i have gathered in the past, the pioneer decks have no problem with dvd-r media. Not too sure about other brands. I also have heard that despite being able to play everything, the dvd-r has stumped the apex ad600a. Hope this helps somewhat--

Thanks Doug for the information.

I have just about completed the first build of my DVD page and I am well on the way to my first DVD-R based on what is written from testing the SpuceUp DVD software (beta testing and the full blown version). Probably means I cannot play it on my Philips 725 when I achieve it!

I remember we talked about archiving for the eventual DVD on this site in late 1999 and that you with others like Long, Matias & Roberto had great inputs into that all that time ago. Its a continuous process of developement.

Thanks again.

HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

Your question 2: I do have a Pioneer-525. Up till now I have not yet burned a CD-R or CD-RW that was not readable by the player. I have been using TDK (RW), Verbatim (RW) and Sony (RW). Also the Nashua (R), Traxdata (R), Kodak (R), That's write (R) and CD- R's without any mark on them could all be read without a problem. Friendly greetings, Eppo R. Kooi.
