Just wondering if there is any particular story behind why some people call Jing Mei Jing Mei and some call her Deb?

When Jing-Mei Chen was a student in the first season, she went by "Deb." So Carter still calls her Deb. She de-Anglacized her name in the interim. So, those who did not know her back then, like Kerry, call her Jing-Me

But, whenever anyone tries to call her Deb, (Except Carter, hint hint) she corrects them firmly by emphasizing her name is "Jing Mei".

"Hitn, Hint" ay? what exactly ARE you suggesting?

She's only done that once. To Mark, on her first day back. She didn't emphasize it either. She simply informed him that she goes by Jing-Mei now. Everyone else it seems just calls her Chen. Out of the staff, I've only heard Kerry and Malucci refer to her as Jing-Mei.

Carter's the only one who ever called her Deb, and she did used to constantly correct him, but I think she likes it now...Romano botched up her name once and she got pissed. Everytime Carter used to say it she'd kind of laugh and shrug, and then after the stabbing she never bothered to correct him anymore...plus she's the only one who *always* calls him John. (except when he rescued her from her mother, that bothered me!) Even Weaver sometimes calls him Carter. Anyways, I think Carter likes it, he refuses to call her Jing Mei, it's almost like it's important to him. Not disrespectful, but affectionate. Remember telling Malluchi..."I knew her before she was Jing Mei."

Romano tries to piss off everyone. It wouldn't be a good episode if Romano weren't there. He screws up everyone's name, but on purpose.

I love Romano though. He is mean, but funny!

I hate to respectfully disagree with JLS 'cause he/she knows so much about the show, but "Deb" has corrected Mark, Malucci, and Romano on her name in the past two seasons.

As for Carter calling Chen, "Deb" instead of "Jing-Mei"- She did correct him, once, on her first day back, as they were walking out together. And in the very next sentence, Carter called her Deb again. I think she rolled her eyes. To him, she's "Deb" and always will be. I think she realizes that. And she lets him get away with it. And he will probably be the only one who gets away with it.

I don't think he even thinks about it anymore. Remember how he had to correct himself for the adoptive parents?

I have a "pet" name-a shortened version of my name. Only two people ever call me by it. I don't like being called by this name by anyone else but these two people. It just sounds wrong. But these two people (who've known me for a long time, by the way) get away with it. My husband is not one of them. It would sound wrong coming from him.
