Alcatraz Company

I have an old stock certificate from "The Alcatraz Company" (circa 1900). I'm wondering if this company had anything to do with building the prison, or it just used the name "alcatraz" for marketing purposes (like today's Alcatraz Bewing Company).

Thank you.

There's no affiliation between "The Alcatraz Company" and the prison.

The U.S. Army built the present cellhouse on Alcatraz between 1908 and 1912. Work was carried out exclusively by Army convicts supervised by a few civilian formen. No civilian contractors were involved. You're right about the name; the "Alcatraz Company" was merely using the name of a then-familiar landmark for advertising purposes.

Dear Mr. Fineman, Do you have a digital copy of the certificate I can look at?
