SONY DVD Player that WILL play VCD CDr

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Does anyone know of ANY SONY DVD Plyer currently being sold (as in I can buy one online right now) that WILL play CDR media in VCD format (home videos)? I know there are several older models that will do it, like the S300, but the older ones are no longer being made, and therefore are no longer for sale anywhere (retail or otherwise in a retail box). Any help is appreciated!

Thanks

I DONT RECOMMEND ANY SONY! GET AN APEX 703A IT HAS 5.1 SOUNDS, ZOOM, PAN&SCAN, 3 DISK CHANGER, PLAYS DVD, VCD, MP3 AND ANY CDR OR CDRW. YOU CAN GET IT FOR UNDER $250.00USD THERE IS NO SONY THAT HAS ALL THESE FEATURES. EXAMPLE. YOU ARE LOOKING AT OVER $350.00USD FOR A SONY THAT HAS 5.1 SURROUND SOUND, BUT IT CAN'T PLAY MP3, CDR, DOESN'T HAVE A 3 DISK CHANGER ETC...

Well, I would really like to keep with the SONY name. Every other component in my home entertainment center (with the exception of my rear and center speakers) is a SONY.

I don't need the DVD player to be anything fancy or spectacular. I don't need the 5.1 audio decoding because my receiver does it, and I dont need anything like zoom or slow-motion. All I need it to do is play, pause, stop , read CDR media (in Audio and VCD format) and select scenes (from the menu).

IF I can't find a SONY with those kind of features, what would be a good recommendation for an alternative (not anything fancy, remember, only the basics.. but it MUST have digital (optical or coaxial) output for the 5.1 stream to make it to my receiver.

Thanks again

Would it be o.k. if it played CD-RWs? If so, the Sony DVP S-360 is a great machine for the money (about $250).

I had a Sony CDP-S300 and it played everything, then I got an S330 and it won't play CDR's, but in a stroke of luck, I burned some test MPEG stuff on a CD-RW and it worked great, so now when I want to make a VCD for home watching I just burn it on CD-RW. I've used Verbatim, Maxell and Yamaha CD-RW's.

CDRW's are not recognized by older cdr drives. If you plan on your creation to be played on a computer over 5 years old it is a 50/50 chance. On cdr drives older than that the odds are even greater it won't see the CDRW. Also if you ever copy or make an audio cd for use with your dvd player on a CDRW (so your piece of crap sony can play it) that disc WILL NOT work on a portable (NON COMPUTER) cd drive. They aren't made to support CDRW, only CDR.

i had the same problem i recommend u use nero burn 5 to write the cd and use a CD-RW to write on and it will work if u write at a low speed like 1x-2x

I've tried it with the Yellow Princos and Vivastar (80 min) CDRs and it works.

Bye.
