Driving in to work this morning, there was a VW Jetta behind me, with a girl (on cel phone, *grr*) at the wheel, and a pug in the passenger seat. That's right, a pug. A little smushed-face doggie. The pug's front feet were on the dashboard; I guess there must have been a cushion or something on the seat to get her elevated that high (pugs are small dogs).
The driver was unfortunately very pushy and zipped past me at the first chance she got. As she sped by, I glanced over, and laughed out loud: now the pug was not only riding in Power Passenger Pose-- she was now BARKING her wee head off, surging forward with each yelp, and pawing at the windshield like, "Go faster, Mom!!"

Cracked my shit up totally. :-)

I was in line yesterday at Macy's... rushrushrush to get hair cut, buy jeans, pick up stuff for NYE party, finish Christmas CDs... anyway, the line was long, and the lady in front of me said. "Can you hold my place? I'm going to run back (to the dressing room) and grab a hanger." I said "No way, man, you lost your place! It's MINE!" And she started cracking up, and pretty soon the whole line was making Christmas Rage jokes and having a fine time waiting in line.

I also had a very nice lady help me with my ten million bags at the Party Supply store.

Yesterday at Target I bought a little itty-bitty christmas tree with lights on it. I brought it to work, and every time I look at it I smile.

Nicest thing of the day: having friends email me to make sure that I'm going to show at the regular Friday night party that we all attend. I didn't feel much like going this morning (starts late and goes all night, and that's a lot for a sleepy girl like me to commit to), but it made me feel so warm and happy inside to know that there are people out there looking forward to seeing me! So instead of going home and passing out on the couch, I'm going to go drink a lot and smoke a lot and play beer pong and eat good munchies and giggle with my friends and feel thankful that I have people in my life who interest me and love me.

My wife and I had lunch today with a couple that just had their first child about three months ago. On December 1, I had taken some digital video clips of the mother and child at another lunch and later made a very nice movie out of that raw footage, if I do say so myself, on my Mac with iMovie2. I brought my camcorder to lunch today and played the finished movie for them... their oohs, aahs, coos, smiles and giggles were hugely rewarding. I'm going to put the movie on a VHS tape and a CD for them to take back to the East Coast on Christmas vacation with their families. Man, it's satisfying when people react so well to your work. :-)

Um....I'm trying, I'm trying! Surely there was *something*. Um...no. But I have high hopes for tonight! And last night I saw Proof of Life, which was pretty and good and Russell Crowe provoked...some kind of feeling...not a chuckle, but happy nonetheless!

We bundled up our son to take him out into the blizzard. All snow pants, snow jacket, a scarf wrapped around his mouth and chin and then a scarf wrapped around his forehead. You couldn't see any part of him, and could just hear this little disembodied voice calling, 'Faster, Mummy, go faster!' as we pulled his sleigh down the alley. Then, he lay down on the sled. It looked like we were taking our laundry in. That was the best part of my winter internment.

I still hate this blizzard.

First off, I woke up! Can't get much better than that! Then a little while ago, I called wifey and told her I loved her and asked her to yell at her son to get the f$%K out of bed because the surf is up. Now that put a smile on my face and some warmth in my heart. I needed the warmth too! It's only 62*f this morning at the beach. Damn I'm ready for summer again! I'm at work right now, my dog is snoring and I've been able to pick the lock on my office door. I'm going to sneak out and see what my subordinates do out in the plant after they lock me in for the day. James

You're a mean one, Mr. Southern California Sunshine and 68 degrees. Sigh. My eyelashes only froze together once. That was good.

-- Anonymous, December 16, 2000

Oh! Hey, I know. Friends of ours left to move back to the States yesterday and couldn't take any of their food with them, so we got it all. On top of the weird stuff like 'Shake and Bake' and 'Dream Whip' (yuck) there were two roasts and loads of canned stuffed, plus sugar, flour, cereal....tons! Free food. Who does not love free food?

-- Anonymous, December 16, 2000

Only 68 degrees? Off with your head! I'd be happy with anything over 30 degrees and no more rain. Cold, freezing, nasty rain. All night long. All day long. We're about to float away; I've been watching for Noah for the past 4 hours. But at least the blizzard missed us (knock on wood).

Yeah James, I had to put on a jacket here in San Diego 'cause it got down to 48 degrees late last night, *gasp*. But we're getting Santa Anna winds tomorrow so it'll be back up in the low 80's. I knew I had become acclimated to California, because in Missouri, if it is 65 degrees, you put on shorts, here, if it's 65 degrees, you put on a coat. Joanne, "Proof of Life.... Russell Crowe provoked...some kind of feeling", provoked a narcisstic and borderline personality exboyfriend (whom I met online, but that's another thread) to email me and tell me what a "gift" I was. What the heck? So did I learn anything? Well no. A CPA I met though an online ad I placed is missing me already even though we haven't yet met. We've talked on the phone and there are no glaring red lights. It is nice to have someone thinking about me in a romantic way, even if it ends up being a short-lived fantasy. I think everyone wants (and probably needs) to have love around the holidays. A lawyer told me that it's Valentine's Day when they see all the divorces filed.

Yeah, well, when California falls into the ocean who'll be laughing then, smart guys? (Well, not me 'cause my face is frozen shut, but still.....) Hey! It's up to 1 degree here today (about, what? 15 for you Americans?) We're doing a frigging jig. This is making me deliriously happy. Gettin' OUT of my house, without fear of frostbite. Yay us.

I got a chuckle at the local Barnes and Noble. The guy ahead of me at the check out asked to have his book gift wrapped. The clerk calls over a customer service person who is a girl about 18 or 19 years old. The clerk says "We need you to go in the back and wrap" Girl says "What??" Clerk: "Yeah, all the customer service people are in the back wrapping" Girl: "What?????" Clerk: "Don't you know how to wrap?" Girl: "No, I've never done it before." Clerk: "For God sakes; who doesn't know how to wrap?" Girl:"I've never done it; I don't know how." Other clerk: "Do you think she is saying RAP, like RAP song?" Girl: "Yeah.....oh, you mean WRAP, like gift wrap?" Everybody in the area starts craking up. Maybe you had to be there, but it was pretty funny.

Oh, and it is 10pm in the sunny southern California beach town where I live and the temp is down to a coooooool 59 degrees, today's high was 72 degrees. A gorgeous day. I'm happy.

I must be weird... I HATE the fact that it's been 80 degrees the week before Christmas! I can't wait to get back to NYC and feel a wind chill, dammit! :)

-- Anonymous, December 18, 2000

What's weird about Shake n Bake? I love those crazy crumbs!

Nothing's made me laugh or even really smile today so far, but I'm not hanging from the rafters or firing from the top of the bell tower yet, so I'd say the day is successful thus far.

-- Anonymous, December 18, 2000

Shake and Bake is just....weird. Maybe it's just a painful reminder of the one or two trips we had to take to the foodbank when husband lost his job. "Uhhhh, 'Shake and Bake'? Thanks, dude, but if I could afford *chicken*, I wouldn't be here." Don't even get me started on 'Dream Whip'.

-- Anonymous, December 18, 2000

Dream Whip sounds sexy. Oh, uh, nevermind. I'm supposed to be the church lady...

-- Anonymous, December 18, 2000

"Supposed" is right...I was joking, but you know that.

-- Anonymous, December 18, 2000

Oh, sure, 'Molson's' is taboo, but 'Dream Whip' is A-OK. I'm vewwwwy confused about these rules, Churchy Girl, uh, I mean, Nicole....

Dream Whip is alright, I guess, but it has nothing, nothing on the can of condensed milk that was also given to us. My son and I ate it with a spoon. Yeah, that's right, a spoon right out of the can. My fillings ache, but it was gooooooood. And right on topic, it made me happy to share my stomach-turning eating habits with my boy. He will look back on this day and remember that we bonded over liquid invert sugar and milk products. Sigh.

-- Anonymous, December 19, 2000

Deb, you brought a tear to my eye with that hallmark moment! I can just picture the two of you all gooey and sticky with condensed milk, unable to talk because your lips are stuck shut. That's too cute.

I know I'm not the only one who has bonded with her mommy over a big bowl of chocolate chip cooky dough. How cool is my mommy? So cool that she used to sit and eat cooky dough and cheesy puffs with me while we watched My So Called Life. Wouldn't trade those nights for the world.

-- Anonymous, December 19, 2000

Floosie, I go to the Church of St. Clare, Patron Saint of Television.

-- Anonymous, December 19, 2000

-- Anonymous, December 19, 2000

Ahhh, floosie, you crack me up.

Hey Robyn, I make these 'Scooby Snacks' for my son. It's graham crackers spread with peanut butter and then chocolate chips sprinkled on top. Am I as cool as your Mom? She sounds pretty cool.

I was a normal person today...PMS is gone. Did not give anybody the finger in traffic....Did not kick a old woman's azz when she hit me w/ a shopping cart...and I even helped her get something off the top self. (granted she was my grandmother...but still) Just happy today is a normal day. I like shake and bake. 10-4

It's 13 degrees here in Atlanta today. That makes me unhappy, I do not like cold and I do not precipitation that doesn't immediately trickle away into the earth. Someone has sent me at least four different email attachments containing viruses. I forgot to set up my coffee maker last night.

But, up here on the seventh floor of my office building, my windows are surrounded by little black birds that are talking to me like crazy, scolding me for being snug and warm inside while they're freezing. It doesn't make it all better, but it's pretty cool.

-- Anonymous, December 20, 2000

Deb, you are definitely a cool Mom--any Mom who uses blizzard time to hang out with her kid is a cool Mom. And you can bet I'll be making some Scooby snacks next time I babysit for any of my friends!

MaryEllen, I'll be in Atlanta Friday unless Delta Airlines screws us entirely. My boyfriend kept saying "It's great, we'll get to go South for a little break from Pennsylvania winter" and I try to explain to him that just because an area falls south of the Mason-Dixon line does not mean that it has tropical temperatures year round. I love the way that people up north will make fun of the South and southerners, but really they think of the South as this magical foreign place...and I think they're right.

-- Anonymous, December 20, 2000

Robyn, the South is a magical foreign place, and I've never been able to adequately explain it to anyone.

-- Anonymous, December 20, 2000

Not much chance of you escaping Pennsylvania weather by heading to Atlanta on Friday, Robyn. We're supposed to have a high tomorrow in the low 30's. It's sleeting here right this moment.

But there is one cool thing about being in Georgia when it snows. Work comes to a halt. Anyone who makes it into work is considered some kind of superhero.

-- Anonymous, December 21, 2000

That's the thing I loved about Atlanta-it shuts down even if it rains too hard! Of course, until I lived somewhere else, I didn't know that wasn't the way it was everywhere.

Other favorite thing about Atlanta is how willing the city is to throw a parade. My senior year of high school was the year we got the Olympics and our school let out so that we could all go down to see the parade. I remember at least 2 other parades that happened right about the same time. I can't wait to be home!
