KING COUNTY - Since 1970, the percentage of household income needed to pay a mortgage in King County has risen from 20 to 35 percent, according to a report released by the county Wednesday. 

The average price of a home in the county in the first quarter of 2000 rose to $310,000 -- from $277,000 in 1999 and $242,000 in '98. 

The median price -- meaning half the homes cost more and half cost less -- in 2000 is $245,000, compared with $230,000 in 1999 and $215,000 in '98.
