Fatal Employee accident at SR Machine Shop in Spencer, NC

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Southern Railway : One Thread

I am seeking to verify a family story about my great great grandfather, R.P. Bryson who supposedly was working on an engine suspended above him at the Southern Railway machine Shop in Spencer, NC, on January 6,1911, it accidentlly fell on him ending his life. He had only been there a couple of months and subsequently was buried in the Lutheran Church cemetery in Spencer, NC but his gravestone has disappeared. Any info would be appreciated. -- Robin Bryson

Robin - I'd suggest you visit the main city library in Salisbury NC and check their newspaper files, probably on microfilm. Since you have the exact date of the accident, it shouldn't take you long to find a newspaper account. This would have been a major news item for that time & place. As to the missing tombstone, the cemetery and/or the church should have records of burials. This record would verify the incident.
