Blackie Boy (?)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Was telling my boss about my upcoming trip and he remembered one of his sisters mentioning that their father had come from "somewhere in NE England". He asked if they had more specific info, and all they've got is a town/parish/village(?) called "Blackie Boy", with Durham being the nearest town and Newcastle the nearest city (He and his sisters were obviously raised properly! ;-) ). Anyone ever hear of the place? Any info would be of interest. He's hoping to get over after he retires in the next couple of years. I'll pass on any info/stories etc. :-)

The only Blackie Boy I have ever heard of is/was a bar in the Bigg Market. Don't even know if it's still there.

The Blackie Boy changed its name to Coffee Johnnies a few years ago but due to public demand and the fact that everyone still used the original name, it has reverted back to "The Blackie Boy" officially. Hardly PC though:-))

Durham's got some weird and wonderful place names, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's a Blackie Boy. There's a Quebec, and Greenland, and of course Pity Me.

He remembers his father saying something about coal mining, so it probably is one of those little villages, may not even be around anymore. This is probably going back 70-80 yrs.
