Storm; This pesky global warming!!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unk's Wild Wild West : One Thread

According to the radar image, this storm stretches from north Texas to central PA. Living in a rural area, I came home from work at noon. The local TV weatherpeople [PC] had worked themselves into a tizzy. They described it as the end of the world as we know it. Here it has been snowing for about 14 hr. The snow is a very light, dry powder. It would be great on a 50 inch, packed base. It was supposed to get cold, but according to my weather station it hasn’t been colder that –7 F; pure tropics. Of course, if the wind comes up, 12 in can be 12 feet in certain areas around here. We live in a forest and the wind doesn’t cause much drifting around the place.

What is it like where you are?

Best wishes,,,,

Z

Snow ?? I haven't seen snow for about 3 years. Here in Ireland and Uk we have had the wettest Autumn on record.(since 1733,I think) At the moment we have winds upto 60mph,hail & yet more rain. The Uk & Southern Ireland have been repeatedly flooded.Tonight in UK there are about 130 flood alerts again. It has rained so hard & for so long that even railway lines have been washed away. Temp about 3 degrees.

We are OK as we are perched on our very own little hill but in open fields so the wind really howls & the slates on the roof flap.Still the stone walls are about 2.5 ft thick & we have plenty of logs & umbrellas !

Here's a national weather radar image...

We just had a dusting of 1"-2"in the Twin cities. They've had more in the north. But the lakes are frozen over and a few ice fishers have already had their SUVs crash through. It happens every year, some just can't wait for a good solid 10+".

The weather in Indy is the same as you describe Z. Fine snow all day, temp in low 20s. 6" on the ground, more coming. We missed the one foot snow that hit Chicago on Monday. Hope it lets up here before this weekend. Expecting visitors from Memphis and Philly. (Trivia question: what do you call someone from Memphis? No redneck jokes please)

Well, Z, it's right chilly down here on the bayou. Didn't freeze yet, but is sure is too cold to run trotlines in a jon boat, I'll tell ya.

Dark and rainy all day, but it's supposed to get back into the 60's by Friday. Me and Kit are drinkin' hot cocoa, and making the most of it. We ran out of marshmellows, but tomorrow we're going out in the pireaux to the marshes to pick some more - the wild one's are much better than those in stores.

Typing this in the studio sitting in shirt sleeves. Birddogs snoozing by backdoor, hazy and warm. Quail flushing up the phalaris break in a slight breeze and about 20 Cel. Quite close to heaven. Living on the edge of the Southern world has its moments. No global warming discernable here today. Just bliss... Yawn... no idea about anything much...cold? Huh? Haven't seen snow since the 1970's. Can't say I miss the stuff...

Z,

Here in OKC, we were blessed (or cursed) with about 20 hours of very fine sleet. It did manage to change over into a light snow before it ended today. I have about 6 inches of small ice balls in my yard and on the streets. Didn't have to go to work today, as most everything was closed down. Some ventured out, I stayed home and safe. Tomorrow will be worse than today, as now all the sleet has become a packed sheet of ice on the roads. But, the good side is that it is now warmer than what we have been seeing as of late. We got to a whopping 26 today, with low winds. YIPPIE!

Sheeple, that reminded me of my friends in Calgary, who just used to laugh their butts off at me when I said it was "cold" in NYC (the temp would be hovering in the single digits, with a wind-chill below zero; yeah, it's COLD).

They'd just laugh and tell me that was a HEAT WAVE where they were concerned.

Kind of made me appreciate certain things a bit more :-)

Here in LV, it's around 55 degrees, no wind, sun is going to set shortly. The temp will then drop to around mid-30s to low-40s, and I'll turn up the heat a bit. There's a bit of snow that can be seen at the top of Mt. Charleston, but nothing to "write home about".

All in all, not a bad deal. Pretty scenery, though, I must say.

Over 14 inches of snow in Springfield, Missouri.

-- Gayla (privacy@please.com), December 13, 2000.

Gayla:

I'm in central Missouri. I suspect that our snow is a lot drier than yours. The Sat. maps showed a lot of moisture where you are. Probably pretty dicey in southern MO.

Best Wishes,,,,

Still parched in SoCal. This November was only the third in 25 years w/o measurable rain. After 2 super dry La Ninas the weather gurus promised us a "normal" winter and it just ain't happening. Maybe tomorow.

Hey, I can't resist this story.

Some years ago I became friends with a family that moved to Tucson from Chicago. One very hot summer day, Roy was taking to his friend on the telephone who still lived in Chicago. When he asked Roy how he could possibly choose to live where it gets so hot, Roy just laughed and said, "You know, I never have to go outside and shovel the stuff!"

Temperature crept up to 70 here in Pensacola today. (That's 21 celcius for Pieter.)

Wow, reading this thread really brings back some memories. Having grown up in Iowa and Minnesota, I really sympathize with you who are battling the cold and snow. I recall one particular day in Minnesota when it dropped to 32 degrees below zero. Stepping ouside had an almost surreal feel to it for this city dweller. NOTHING was moving. No vehicles, no people, no animals and not even the slightest breeze to break the illusion that "smoke" arising from chimneys had frozen in place.

At the other extreme, I remember a 127 degree day while living in the desert of Nevada. Saying it was hot is a ridiculous understatement but bottom line... Give me the heat over the cold anytime!

Thanks Z. It was an amazing experience for a Houston girl unaccustomed to snow. It's beautiful, but I still can't move my car! J

-- Gayla (privacy@please.com), December 13, 2000.

I't cold here in Minneapolis. And I blame my girlfriend for this. Or the Internet. Or both.

She just bought an SUV. I was told -- nay guaranteed -- on this very internet that buying SUVs would raise the mean global temperature by tens of degrees immediately, turn Minneapolis into a tropical paradise, allow me to plant that palm tree in the back yard I've always wanted, and put some annoying places like New York City well underwater.

This all sounded very promising. So, she gets the SUV. What happens? Sub-zero weather! It must be her fault; it can't be the Internet's. After all, since I read it on the internet, it must be true.

80 and foggy in NE FL today. Downright balmy!!

CD - did not know you hailed from Pensacola. Spent much time over that way in previous marriage. The EX is from Foley, AL and sis-in- law lives in Pen now.

Last time I was there we had dinner at Zeke's Landing over on the beach. NICE PLACE!!

Still heating entirely with wood. We have next year's heat already lined up and we'll start cutting and hauling at the crack of spring.

-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), December 14, 2000.

Drizzle, light wind, cold -- 42 degrees. Jesse Jackson is on TV right now, so it looks like another COLD DAY IN HELL!

-- bardou (bardou@baloneyyyy.com), December 15, 2000.

Up here in Toronto we've had 35cm (14") of snow since Monday. First storm dumped very fine powdery snow (somewhat unusual for this time of the year; normally it is wetter and heavier), but the dump last night was more usual.

Temperatures have been 7 to 10 C below normal, but they are now close to seasonal.

That storm’s finally got here. We’ve had about six feet of snow so far. Wind’s blowin’ so hard that half the chickens have been plucked, right in the coop; poor nekkid little things sure do make a pitifull sight.

I saw one of the neighbors out in his yard, sticking an old cane pole down into the fresh snow. He said he was lookin’ fer his dawg - it’s a Great Dane.

And LeRoy LeDeaux closed the bait and gas store for the first time EVER. Said his worms were all frozen stiff - said they looked just like Slim Jims, and he was afraid to sell them, because some fool fisherman would be sure to get them mixed up, and find out that they tasted just the same, and he would lose all his Slim Jim business. Well, I better mosey on over to the Salvation Army shelter, and see what we got to eat tonight. I hope it’s not cold cuts and popsickles - those old biddies sure have a morbid sense of humor sometimes. I just thought you all might want to hear about how bad it is down here on the bayou.

In Colorado, we had a light dusting of snow with temperatures into the single digits. Just in time too, since I'm leaving for Cancun tomorrow. I needed this to make me appreciate the white sandy beaches and coral even more.

Just light skiffs of snow coming down daily here in Calgary, but the temp has been hovering around -30 C for a week now. This morning, with wind chill, we hit -48 C (the two scales, Celsius and Fahrenheit, meet at -40).

The skiffs of snow make city roads treacherous with glassy ice, and over 1,000 motor vehicle accidents, some of them fatal, have been reported in the past week.

Other than the weather, things are normal. :)

-- Rachel Gibson (rgibson@hotmail.com), December 15, 2000.

Yep we 'got' hammered w/power outages and STRONG wind here in NE ohio, took many claims on Tuesday wind damage, roofs trees, etc....next day we got 6 inches of snow.

It is cold here very cold here.

Son is in Tampa, called this am to let me know it was 78. *&%$@#!! lil creep.
