Cannot copy VCD (*.DAT) file into hard disk on WindowsME

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I am using WindowsME, and when i tried to copy *.dat file (file contained in VCD) into my hard disk, it failed for some unknown reasons. It could copy until 80-90%, but and error occured, and could no longer continue the copy. How to solve this problem?

Any step by step procedures will be much appreciated. Thank you.

I have the same problem with some factory pressed discs, recently a 72 mins playing time disc. I am using win98 and all 4 of my cdrom drive/cd writer failed to copy with above message. Anybody knows why? Is there some protection as in data disc?

Have you tried using vcdgear to convert .DAT to .MPG instead of copying

(people correct me if I am wrong) DAT file, same as cd audio tracks, may have bitwise error in it, and is still allowed on the disc. Your VCD player will receive it as a "blib" and produce a small blocky field, but otherwise everything works well. But when you copy the file using utilities from O/S, you will get an error.

That is why CD-ROM can contain only up to 650MB of data, while VCD can go further (680?), because of the lack of bitwise check.
