greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Work of Edgar Allan Poe : One Thread

We are learning about Poe in school and i have a question about his death WHAT HAPPENED. That is realy bugging! I herd things about it, like he was killed over the elections on the day he died or he was beaten. Can you tell me any facts or ideas on his death?

The theory you are interested in is called the Cooping Theory and is just one of several possibilities brought forward by researchers over the years. None of which offer anything of difinitive value in reaching a conclusive end to the mystery in general. Based on available evidence, the mystery will remain with us for the forseeable future. Even the "Rabies Theory" offered as late as 1996 by Dr. Michael Benitez (I hope I got that name right) is merely a best guess.

You can find some good material on these subjects at the URL address: http://www.eapoe.org/geninfo/poedeath.htm Also, I would refer you to two biographies, Arthur H. Quinn's "Edgar Allan Poe - A Critical Biography" and Kenneth Silverman's "Edgar Allan Poe - "Mournful and Never-ending Remembrance."
