12.12.2000 00:22 RI - Smoke smell in cockpit diverts plane to Green

WARWICK -- A Delta Express 737 en route from Logan Airport in Boston to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., made an unscheduled stop yesterday at T.F. Green Airport after the pilot reported smelling smoke in the cockpit.

The jet, carrying 5 crew members and 45 passengers, landed without incident about 12:30 p.m., after the 50-mile flight from Logan. The jet was taken out of service and passengers were rebooked on other flights bound for Florida.

The plane was being inspected last night to isolate the cause of the problem.
