Colin Veitch: FAO Jonno

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Jonno mentioned Veitch as being a Toon hero last week and there's a great little feature on him in this month's True Faith. He apparently played Total Football before the Dutch even knew about football, was a great intellectual, a political activist and passionate about NUFC. As True Faith put it "He won 3 FA Cupmedals and two Championships with United, he and Bill McCracken bestriding football like the Collossuses they were, doing more than anyone to put Newcastle in the Pantheon of great clubs". In true United fashion, the Board sacked him. He spent two years at Bradford City and came back to write for the Chronicle. He was banned from SJP for his opinions on goings on at the club. Anyhow, as they point out, it's a crying shame that he gets no recognition from the club or the city. How about renaming the East Stand after him?
