Shearer in MOTD mag

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

They are full of praise for his new "open" persona although he says precisely nowt. He does, however, say that he doesn't regret coming to Newcastle for a second. He more or less admits that we are so far behind Arsenal and Man United that he will never win the PL with us as a player but says that being at United has been far better than he could have dreamed. He also says the reason he loves being back at home is that Geordies have the right approach to life: get your money on Friday, spend it over the weekend and let tomorrow worry about itself. Full of praise for YBR, too. Incidentally, he foresaw how we'd crumble of we had an injury crisis...

As a Newcastle fan I actually have feelings of guilt about Al ever coming here. Basically if the truth is to be told then it has to be said that he made a big mistake coming here, and although I'm sure he means it when he says he loves it up here, he must surely have times when he wishes he'd gone to Old Trafford.

Basically, Newcastle United have ruined the career of Alan Shearer and thats why, as a toon fan, I feel guilty about it.

Anyone feel similar?

Nah, it's just plain unlucky. When he signed it was the best thing in the world and put NUFC back on the global stage.

The amazing thing is that he has stayed with us, when it would have been easier to go abroad, Portugal or Germany, and bagged a host of domestic honours. Whatever his detractors might say, there are still a lot of clubs that would take him, and maybe even win trophies. But he sacrificed it all (ok, he does take a large wedge of cash every week) to be with us. He's not infalible, but certainly a hero.

You can't possibly live in Geordieland to come out with that kind of nonsense.

OK - the rest of you - you're a top class player, which shirt do YOU want to put on next week - the black & white of Newcastle or ManU??? Both will pay you £40k-ish for the priveledge and you're an automatic first choice for either team.

Do you want to be cheered on by 50000 Geordies or mumbled at through 70000 prawn sandwiches?

Jonno

Born and bred Geordie from Gateshead mate (no funny comments please). Love my City, love my team, love my people.

Alan Shearer did'nt come to NUFC just so he could come home. He came to win trophies and develop further as a player.

He was let down by Keegan who thought of no one but himself when quitting and let down by Dalglish for single handedly ruining all the superb work done by KK.

I am dyed-in the-wool black and white but if I were a world class pro footballer I would go to the club which could enable me to make the best of my talent. If that team were NUFC then that would be the ultimate dream come true.

These are the lines along which Alan Shearer thought when he signed and it is why I, as a Geordie, feel irrational guily that he has effectively lost the chance become a world wide footballing legend beacause of the bad luck he has suffered at the toon.

I'm not criticizing the club at all for this, more a case of cursing fate for dealing Al - and us - such cruel luck.

All he could have done at Manchester United was be part of the best team in the league. At NUFC he had a chance to be the "missing piece" of the puzzle which brought the silverware to SJP. A proper test of ability that and makes sure that you get all the praise as everyone knows that you made the difference. A winner's medal at NUFC was worth 20 medals for shooting fish in barrels.

Incidentally, he manages to enjoy an untarnished reputation for his playing ability before his injury, whilst anything other than success at Old Trafford would have provoked universal contempt. No lose situation really.

Some people are far happier being in a company they love even if it means not having the status or medals or whatever they'd have gotten at a bigger company. Good on Shearer for staying true to himself.

Poor Al, though, one Championship medal for the legend that is/was Alan Shearer. Having said that, I wish I'd done medicine instead of law and stayed at home instead of coming to London and nee one idolises me to make up for it. You pays your money..
