Can virtual dub open it? Is it a windows mpeg, avi codec? What does windows media player say it is? Mpeg decoder or avi? Curious...

no virtual dub cannot open it. it was an online film that dled to a temp folder so i could view it online. So i copied that file onto somewhere else on my pc and it had it as an asx file.

Go to www.analogx.com and download the freeware program called text scan. [check out other stuff to. Nice free programs here] then open text scan and read the .asx file. Does the header IN the file say anything? [if you scan an mpg file encoded with tmpgenc you will see tmpgenc adds that tmpgenc was used to encode it] so hoping it will show what encoded the asx and what format etc . . .

Doug,

The ASX file supposed to be the file pointer to the actual ASF on line. How you manage to watch the ASX while off line with WMP, it's beyond the encoding scheme of it. Anyway, if you are capable of viewing it, then you should be able to open it up inside TMPGENc12b and convert it to mpeg1 or mpeg2. Warning, it's extremely slow since TMPGENc has to use the WMP filters to decode the ASX/ASF. Just rename the ASX extension to ASF and TMPGENc it.

hi mates this is sumant from india i had the same prob of converting asx to avi. this is the way 1.open ur asx file in notepad ...in that u will see the link for asf file 2.download asf recorder(its free) from the net in that u will have an option for open url just put the link in that and record 3.now u will have the entire asf file on ur comp 4.download asf tools 3.1 from the net(its free) in that u have an option for converting asf to avi, just use that or u can even use virtual dub 1.3 c here in this step

it worked gr8 for me...no distortion of quality etc
