Homeschool question

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Our 13 year old is interested in learning drafting. I was hoping there is someone out there in the forum group that knows a thing or two about drafting and could help us out with some information. What math courses are neccessary for drafting? Also does this course go beyond into college level classes? We already a two books on this but I think they are for kids that already have a beginging understanding of drafting. I was thrilled when he chose his course instead of one that could be dangerous. I know mother hen I need to learn to let go, but it wil be a long time before I get up the courage not to be worried all the time. Well thanks in advance for any and all help you all might be able to give us. Michelle

I had drafting in public school, in 9th and 10th grades. I had no advanced math corses at that time however, Algebra was considered an advanced class back then. Good luck sounds like something you'll all learn about.

I know two women whom homeschool here in my area, and I admire them very much, very brave they are.

Thanks Stan and Hillbilly, I did not know junior high offered drafting. I think that we should start at the begining of this crouse so that our son will get the full learning of it. We have two books on drafting, but I will need more teacher info to be able to use them. I will probably ask the drafting teacher at our local school for help also. Thanks for your time. Michelle

Michelle -- look in your yellow pages directory under "Professional Associations" or "Architects" and there should be a professiona association of some sort (maybe in the closest major centre to you) that would give you some guidance. An architect would be a good place to start, too -- tell them what your situation is and ask for guidance on where to start.

Have you considered your local community college? Many homeschool kids take courses at the community college that parents can't offer at home. My son is 16 and taking courses at the community college since he bypassed high school and all the nonsense that goes with it. Much success to you...

Classes that help with drafting are geometry, trigonometry and algebra. Check with your local junior college on what the prerequisites are to be sure.

Check out www.timberdoodle.com. They have some pre-drafting & beginning drafting skills books. We are using some of them. Neat stuff!

Thanks Brian, I'll look for the bok you sugested. Would you know by any chance when it was published? There is a good used book store about 40 miles from here that I can look into. Our tiny little library here mostly caries love stories and childrens books. I am constantly asking for certain books and always the answer is no. I had hoped they would take the hint and get some differant books in by now. But they are stuborn!! Thanks again for your help.
