WIRE:12/08/2000 13:04:00 ET Alaska Air jet makes emergency landing in PortlandSEATTLE (Reuters) - An Alaska Airlines jet carrying 44 passengers made an emergency landing in Portland, Oregon, Friday after one of its two engines failed, the airline said. After reporting that the left side engine on the Boeing Co. 737-700, was "not responsive," the pilots shut it down and diverted the Sacramento-to-Seattle flight to Portland to avoid heavy fog conditions in western Washington State. "If the plane had two engines, it certainly would have landed in Seattle, with the avionics on the plane. But the combination of one engine and fog is nothing you would ever want to deal with," Alaska spokesman Greg Witter said. No injuries were reported among the passengers or the five-member crew as the plane landed smoothly just before 9 a.m. local time, Witter said.
