Mishaps douse lights around northern Nevada

About 2,500 northern Nevada homes were without power for several hours Thursday in separate incidents, a Sierra Pacific Co. spokesman said.

Shortly after 4 p.m., nearly 300 homes in west Fernley lost power, Bob Sagan said. Officials believe the mishap was caused by contractors working near power lines. Service was restored by 6:20 p.m., he said.

At 4:40 p.m., a fire on top of a utility poll on Sullivan Lane north of McCarran Boulevard in Sparks knocked out power to nearly 2,200 homes, Sagan said. Power was restored by about 8 p.m., he said.

The cause of the outage was being examined, he said.
