Holiday gifts

So, has anyone finished their holiday shopping?

Did you buy or make a loved one the PERFECT gift, and can't wait to give it to him/her? What did you buy/make?

As a Yankee Swap gift (a sadistic holiday ritual involving anonymous gifts assembled and fought over through a series of trades...usually exacerbated by alcohol over the course of the night), I found a Pink Pather lunchbox. It is swank. He is holding a martini and sporting a devilish grin. I anticipate much fighting over this gift.

Have I even STARTED my holiday shopping?

No way.

Many of the males in my family will receive the gift of beer and undershirts from me this year. I think this is absolutely the perfect gift -- practical and desirable. They can all sit around in their undershirts, watching TV and drinking beer, and feeling that life offers little more.

Now I just have to go buy the actual undershirts, and figure out which brands of beer for which person.

I wish I could think of something equally easy and practical and always-loved for female relatives.

Jette, how about flannel pajamas and a bottle of Godiva chocolate liquor for the ladies?

Dwanollah, I haven't started either. I might start this weekend. But then, I might just pay my electricity bill...

My 3 year old son loves any instrument with strings. My Father in law plays an upright bass in a Bluegrass band and also has the usual assortment of guitars, banjo, mandolin, etc. My son likes Paw Paw's bass the best.

Sooooo

I am in the process of building a scaled down version of an upright bass for him from Santa. Not with all the curves of the real thing, more of a boxy sorta shape, but not horribly ugly either.

For the past three years in a row I've finished my Christmas shopping by Halloween. I don't enjoy being around malls or the post office from about Thanksgiving onward, so I get it out of the way super early. Also, I've started buying more gifts online and having them holiday wrapped and shipped straight from the retailer to the recipient. Three years ago, I bought gifts for about eight couples, this year I'm only doing up to five, but I always make sure I get them one gift that's both unique and perfectly suited to them both (and sometimes also fun for their kids).

I'm done! Well, except for the office Secret Santa gift, and I know what I'm buying for that.

Damn good thing, too, because I sprained my freakin' ankle last Saturday and the last thing I need right now is to be hobbling around the mall on crutches.

My sister and I went together to get my mom some new wine glasses. I found some absolutely beautiful cut-crystal glasses. I can't wait to give them to her. I'm also continuing the tradition of giving my niece and nephew an ornament every year - this year, the nephew is getting a rocket ship (he's seriously into rockets these days) and the niece is getting the 2000 Swarovski ornament, a gorgeous crystal star.

Just to add - the kids get toys, too, not just a tree ornament. I'm a very good auntie.

I am almost done with the cross-stitch I am making for my little brothers... of course, I've been working on it for years now.

I'm telling all my friends their Christmas presents will be late because I am doing all my shopping at the Nixon Library gift shop when I go to LA for New Year's.

Wait... you're gonna be here for New Year's? Wanna come to our party?!

I think everyone's getting Christmas CDs from me this year and that's it. This is totally unlike me, but I'm soooo not into the Christmas Spirit....

Well, I found the perfect gift idea for my mom, but through a sad story. Their huge Christmas tree fell down and a lot of ornaments were smashed. So we're all planning to get her an ornament or two each, this year.

Incidentally, the silver ornament that I have from my first Christmas is allegedly worth $550 now. (I guess I better go dig it out of a box and polish it or something.) So ornaments for kids are not only cute but can be good investments. :)

I am waaaaaay too afraid of my son to NOT make sure there is a 'Pop-up Pirate' under that tree. A five-year-old's wrath is awesome indeed. That's not to say I'm buying it, it's on the grandparents' list with a little star next to it. Thank you, Santa. We're not doing gifts this year, with me out of work we're powdered-milk poor, so it's just not feasible. Sigh. Maybe I'll get off my fat, depressed duff and make some prints of the boy for his grandparents, but I wouldn't count on it.

I am so loving the beer and undershirts. My family wouldn't get it, sadly. I'm the only cool one. Ha!

I just read this on another board...someone got a purple, studded thong and a carton of cigarettes...doesn't that just have potential written all of it? :D

I haven't bought any Xmas prezzies yet except for Toys For Tots gifts that we hand over at the company holiday bash. I got an electronic dog toy that barks and does tricks. It has pink ears, so I assume a little girl will get it. They didn't have any "good" Barbies (i.e., Barbies that have some play value built in that goes beyond taking off and putting on the one outfit and the single pair of shoes that she comes with). Also, I didn't want to try and guess which ethnicity of doll would be in greater demand this year, so I got a slightly less gender-specific goodie. Since there was a handy little boy in the toy aisle, I asked him what he'd like to get for a gift and he went ape over some Matchbox-like cars that come in a carrying case that has a ramp built into the top. And the case had a handle. He was positive that some other little boy would love that. So I took his word for it.

I haven't done anything else holiday-related. I will probably end up doing all my shopping after the 14th (payday).

Milla, that's so good of you to put some thought and effort into that. So many people don't bother.

I always try to make something for one of my relatives - a pair of mittens or a scarf or something. This year I had a wee accident with my right thumb so had to call off that idea. I've done tons of shopping for the fiance, of course, and got the absolutely perfect gift for my Snoopy-loving nephew: a Snoopy watch. He'll love it. I always try to put some extra effort into my father's gift since everyone tends to get him the same kinds of things: this year the gift's not bad, but I outdid myself year before last when I got him the new cd by his favourite musician and had it autographed. :)

Aw, thanks!

Actually, one test of a good toy for me is whether or not I'd be happy if I got it as a door prize or if I would enjoy messing with it if I saw it in someone's office. I'm sorry I don't know any little children to give either of these toys to, I think they'll be fun to play with! *Bark bark* *Vrooom vroom* (I need to remember to slip some batteries in with the dog, though. I got it home and realized that the cord I saw wasn't a plug but some time of battery-operated control. Damn.)

-- Anonymous, December 08, 2000

Hey, I thought about buying one of those dogs myself, and disguising it as a joke gift for someone. :)

-- Anonymous, December 08, 2000

Why not? They're pretty silly.

Better & cheaper than a Furby! (I've seen Furby knockoffs now, people--they're called Herbies & have embroidered faces. They are scary.)

I finished mine. Did a lot of it online except for my nieces and nephew. My mom collects kaliedoscopes so I sent her a coffee book on them. She got it today, and thinking it was gift wrapped, opened the box. Duh.
