Answers

The Supreme Court vacated the ruling of the Florida Supreme Court that extended the deadline for submission of recount information and sent the case back to the Florida court for clarification.

Specifically, the Supreme Court couldn't determine (1) whether the Florida court saw the Florida Constitution's protection of the rights of voting as circumscribing the legislature's authority under Article II of the U.S. Constitution to determine the manner of elections and (2) the role of Title 3, section 5 of the U.S. Code in the Court's decision.

So they tossed the ball back into the Florida court. The ref has called time-out. I'd think Gore's team would consider it premature to concede defeat at this point. Actually, I'd be disappointed if they did. I'm kind of enjoying this scrappy democratic process. But, as Garrison Keilor said, "It's hard to sustain an election."
