Answers

Hardly a fair comparison. I know your views on this subject LR and I agree.

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

It's causing big debate around the MUFC sites and fanzines.................... and bars.

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

Speaking for myself, nope. distasteful and disrespectful.

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

Stevo..I didn't see the word "hypocritical"..but I know what you mean.

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

I think it's lighthearted banter....doesn't mean that i'm not respectful of those poor russian submariners!

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

Black humour. No problems with it

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

Its a bit like the Munich one......it tastes bad but people will keep using it.

Black 'humour' and 'terrace' humour will always go hand in hand.

I reckon its one of those where its neither right nor wrong to be honest, having said that...I wouldn't use either.

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

you dish it out, you have to be prepared to take it.

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

Min...what do ya mean?

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

LR, I hate to hear the Munich chant but I have heard sick songs from OT about Hillsborough, Leeds (Kebabs, anyone??) and Matthew Harding so I also hate to hear a Manc being too self-righteous about it.

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

Woaahhh...simmer down....the lads asking a perfectly legitimate question (for a change)...not being self righteous at all....in fact I get the impression that he's against it....

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

Well, I for one wouldn't sing it if I was a ManUre supporter (but God spared me that). However, I can see it going down reaaly well (oops!) with the "fans". Black humour - yes. But we don't all have to laugh - even if you do see the funny side.

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

Course I'm feckin' against it. I don't sing it..won't sing it...actively campaign for us to STOP singing it.

BTW Dougal...yer right about Leeds songs..one or two quiet chants..nowt special..but yer so so wrong about Hillsbro' chants at OT...so wrong.

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

BTW Dougal...Mathew Harding?..do U really think we'll sing songs about this bloke?....who is he...sorry..who WAS he? He's a nobody. Some fans have done helicopter impressions towards Chelsea fans but nowhere near the scale of what they've done.

We as United fans like to think we're slightly apart from the run-of- the-mill "footy" fan and as such we have showed our class by not lowering ourselves to the level of Leeds, Chelsea and Liverpool by retakiating about Hillsbro'....yet this submarine song blows that apart.

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

Soz, LR but I have this from a horse's mouth (not Jools). And what about hissing at White Hart Lane? I know you like to think of yourselves as a class apart but your fans get involved in unsavoury incidents like anyone else.

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

Sorry I got the impression at the start of this that a serious question was being asked, not the introducung prelude to a bunch of "we dont't do these things" and "why does everyone hate us" crap.

Who 'was' Matthew Harding he asks, so patently knows he is deceased, "we only made a few helicopter noises" oh yeah.....just like the Leeds fans only made a few aeroplane noises.

We didn't laugh and sing about Hillsbro' he says, oh yeah.....what was all that mass waving of the Sun newspaper crap the following season then.

Get real Lanky and accept that your lot are JUST THE SAME as every other club in the game.......there are some headbangers and there are some good people........Newton Heath are by no means all angels.....just ask the Turkish policeman who has been confined to a wheelchair since coming into conflict with "The Stretford End Crew" or is that another ground?

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

Douggie...ya can't just say "I have it from the horses mouth"...when THIS horse right here is telling you something different. We do not sing at the scousers in unision like they DID to us. We still get aeroplanes from one or twenty of them scouse twats...just like there are one or twenty MUFC twats who'll do a Hillsbro'. Dunno what U mean about Spurs and hissing. Explain?

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

It WAS a serious question...hijaked by Douggie and Min when they introduced OTHER chants. I was SPECIFICALLY asking if NUFC fans on here thought the submarine song was wank...like I actually do.

I haven't got a freakin' clue what direction ITK is either going or coming from. You wish to ignore the Sarcasm in my "Who is Mathew HArding" question will IGNORING the fact that I have admitted SOME idiots have been seen doing a helicopter..like you said...we all have them...but we have NEVER had THOUSANDS. Numpty!

And what the fuck are you rabiting on about when U mention the Sun newspaper? Tell me how that...if it occured....is mocking their dead like they mocked ours...and then tell me how many people did it..IF IT HAPPENED!!

I can not and will not accept that our lot are the same....we are talking about singing and chanting in UNISION here...hundreds if not thousands.....of course United has arseholes...but up to the introduction of "City's going down like a ........" we were angels compared to what we've heard from the likes of Leeds, Liverpool, Chelsea etc.

Again ITK waffles on about a Turkish policeman in a wheelchair, but what teh fuck has this to do with me attempting to disown 5000 United fans singing a song with reference to dead Russians.

It wasn't just you ITK...Douggie had a swipe fer no fuckin' reason and refuses to see exactly what I'm saying.

BTW..we think we're different as a bunch or fans in the same way as you lot do....

Without getting into the "who is worst/who is better" argument, as I am sure that's not where LR intended to go, I am always disappointed and a little embarrassed whenever fans - anywhere - start or continue songs relating to disasters and loss of life. Personally I think it's abysmal. However having said that, I know it is never going to stop. The only thing we can do is to NOT join in, and to continually express our distaste as football fans to this garbage.

That's my two pennorth!

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

I really don't know why I am doing this, but the Sun reference was: following Hillsbro' that paper suggested that a possible cause of the disaster was because of drunk Liverpool supporters arriving late from the pub and pushing their way in.

As a result the Sun was "banned" from being bought in Liverpool.......then, when Liverpool went to OT the following season, the entire Stretford end arrived armed with copies of the paper and waved them at the 'Pool supporters.....if that is not just as bad as chanting in your eyes, then sorry, but it is in mine.

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

.....sorry, that should of course have said 'almost' all of the Stretford End....ect etc etc.

I'm sure there were a few who didn't.

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

Absolutely NO WAY

(1)..AT that time the Stretty held around 10,000. NO WAY were there 10,000 freakin' Sun newspapers.

(2)...Waving newspapers is like reminding them of what they did and why they can no longer do it...just like when we sing "Where's yer famous Munich song?"...no reference to dead men.

Anyway....in my opinion, drunken fans DID contribute to the deaths of 96..as did piss poor planning, shite arangements by the FA, poor foresight from Sheffield Wednesday, crap policing, bad positioning of ambulances, wrong diagnosis carried out by doctors and paramedics, and above all else a very unhealthy attitude the football fan in general.

Back to the serious questions Lanky......do Newton Heath 'supporters' ever do anything wrong......end of thread as far as I'm concerned!

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

"City's going down like Posh with her Bodyguard" would be a good one, See the Daily star later in the week......

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

hijacked? ha ha.

Gav was right - i was asking/posing a serious question in response to what i THOUGHT was a serious question.

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

Sick humour is only really humourous to the sick of mind.

I agree entirely with Pete iC's comments - we should all do our damnedest to isolate the sick b@st@rds - whichever team's colours they wear - who find deep personal tragedy a source of terrace humour, and not be afraid to say so, loudly and often.

I'm right with you on this occasion LR.

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2000

About ten years ago, the whole of the away end (Man United) fans started hissing and kept it up for ages. What they were doing was trying to sound like gas. Which went down about as well as Bosnich's Nazi salute at Tottenham. And it DID happen, LR. I didn't hijack it, BTW, you know how I feel about feckwits who do the Munich thing. I was just expanding the debate.

-- Anonymous, December 05, 2000

LR - in answer to your question, it`s not `big`, it`s not `clever` and it`s not `funny`. If it only highlighted the insensitivity of the chanters it wouldn`t matter, but it reflects badly on all the supporters, and that, I suspect, is what makes your blood boil.

-- Anonymous, December 05, 2000

Yes it does reflect badly on the fans Galaxy, but that ain't the only reason why I have a bassie on about it.

Comrades.

-- Anonymous, December 05, 2000

I did realise that too, LR. (:o)
