i want to know about Edger Allen Poe right away

-- Anonymous, February 27, 2001

In school I learned much information on Edger Allen Poe. Such as he was born in Boston and he died near Baltimore. (his ceremony was in the actual city of Baltimore.) When he was a small boy his alcoholic father left him and his mother died of Tuberculosis. He was then taken in by his aunt and uncle. He loved to recite poetry to his aunt and uncle's guests. When he got older he moved out and after a while married his cousin. He loved his wife and was very loyal to her. But when she died at an early death, Edger was devistated. He then wrote horror stories (i.e Tell-Tale Heart) to show the world how miserable he felt. He also died an early death. The End (or is it....)

by James Southall Wilson

dgar Allan Poe was born January 19, 1809 in Boston, where his mother had been employed as an actress. Elizabeth Arnold Poe died in Richmond on December 8, 1811, and Edgar was taken into the family of John Allan, a member of the firm of Ellis and Allan, tobacco- merchants.

Poe's mother, Elizabeth Arnold Poe, died in Richmond on December 8, 1811. After attending schools in England and Richmond, young Poe registered at the University of Virginia on February 14, 1826, the second session of the University. He lived in Room 13, West Range. He became an active member of the Jefferson Literary Society, and passed his courses with good grades at the end of the session in December. Mr. Allan failed to give him enough money for necessary expenses, and Poe made debts of which his so-called father did not approve. When Mr. Allan refused to let him return to the University, a quarrel ensued, and Poe was driven from the Allan home without money. Mr. Allan probably sent him a little money later, and Poe went to Boston. There he published a little volume of poetry, Tamerlane and Other Poems. It is such a rare book now that a single copy has sold for $200,000.00

Moldavia, Poe's last home in Richmond located at Fifth and Main Streets. John Allan bought the house in 1825, and Edgar lived there before entering the University of Virginia in 1826. In Boston on May 26, 1827, Poe enlisted in The United States Army as a private using the name Edgar A. Perry. After two years of service, during which he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant-major, he secured, with Mr. Allan's aid, a discharge from the Army and went to Baltimore. He lived there with his aunt, Mrs. Maria Poe Clemm, on the small amounts of money sent by Mr. Allan until he received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Meanwhile, Poe published a second book of poetry in 1829: Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane and Minor Poems. After another quarrel with Allan (who had married a second wife in 1830), Poe no longer received aid from his foster father. Poe then took the only method of release from the Academy, and got himself dismissed on March 6, 1831.

Soon after Poe left West Point, a third volume appeared: Poems by Edgar Allan Poe, Second Edition. While living in Baltimore with his aunt, Mrs. Clemm, young Poe began writing prose tales. Five of these appeared in the Philadelphia Saturday Courier in 1832.

With the December issue of 1835, Poe began editing the Southern Literary Messenger for Thomas W. White in Richmond; he held this position until January, 1837. During this time, Poe married his young cousin, Virginia Clemm in Richmond on May 16, 1836.

Poe's slashing reviews and sensational tales made him widely known as an author; however, he failed to find a publisher for a volume of burlesque tales, Tales of the Folio Club. Harpers did, however, print his book-length narrative, Arthur Gordon Pym in July of 1838.

Little is known about Poe's life after he left the Messenger; however, in 1838 he went to Philadelphia where he lived for six years. He was an editor of Burton's Gentleman's Magazine from July, 1839 to June, 1840, and of Graham's Magazine from April, 1841 to May, 1842. In April, 1844, with barely car fare for his family of three, [including his aunt, Virginia's mother, who lived with them], Poe went to New York where he found work on the New York Evening Mirror.

In 1840, Poe's Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque was published in two volumes in Philadelphia. In 1845, Poe became famous with the spectacular success of his poem "The Raven," and in March of that year, he joined C. F. Briggs in an effort to publish The Broadway Journal. Also in 1845,Wiley and Putnam issued Tales by Edgar A. Poe and The Raven and Other Poems.

The year 1846 was a tragic one. Poe rented the little cottage at Fordham, where he lived the last three years of his life. The Broadway Journal failed, and Virginia became very ill and died on January 30, 1847. After his wife's death, Poe perhaps yielded more often to a weakness for drink, which had beset him at intervals since early manhood. He was unable to take even a little alcohol without a change of personality, and any excess was accompanied by physical prostration. Throughout his life those illnesses had interferred with his success as an editor, and had given him a reputation for intemperateness that he scarcely deserved.

In his latter years, Poe was interested in several women. They included the poetess, Mrs. Sarah Helen Whitman, Mrs. Charles Richmond, and the widow, Mrs. Sarah Elmira Shelton, whom he had known in his boyhood as Miss Royster.

The circumstances of Poe's death remain a mystery. After a visit to Norfolk and Richmond for lectures, he was found in Baltimore in a pitiable condition and taken unconscious to a hospital where he died on Sunday, October 7, 1849. He was buried in the yard of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, Maryland.

In personal appearance, Poe was a quiet, shy-looking but handsome man; he was slightly built, and was five feet, eight inches in height. His mouth was considered beautiful. His eyes, with long dark lashes, were hazel-gray.

To all the peons that want to come on this site to talk trash about one of this nations greatest poets, I feel pity upon thy soul. Ye hath to try to destroy someones name just to make your pathetic lives seem better. One thing Edger tried to do by letting the world see his work, is to show people that you should never be ashamed to show how you truely feel within thine own heart. But all these people that only want to come on here to try to make fun of him, to me it seems that they are so scared to be true to themselves that that have to try to bring everyone down to their level so they will suffer just as they are. To all the people out there that are truely interested in getting to know about his life and work, you have my respect and I encourage you to presue your thirst till it is completely filled. Don't let these idiots turn your from your journey of knowledge.

-- Anonymous, October 21, 2004

Edgar Allen Poe was born in Jan. 19 1809. His mother was a beautiful actress. When Egar was born (i.e. origanally Edgar Poe) his fater left him and Edgar's mother. He soon died of alcholism. As his mother worked as an actress.. she couldn't afford a babysitter. so little Edgar watched his mother play Juliet in Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet". As you know ther is a terrible death scene at the end where she kills herself. Edgar watched his mother "die" 6 times a week until he was 3 1/2. On day she discovered she was dying of Consumption, now known as Tiberculosis. Finally she died and Edgar had no where to live. His mothers friend Frances Allen wanted to adopt him. However, her husband would not let her adopt Edgar because he was the son of an actress which was the 2nd lowest job a women could have at that time. Eventually John Allen gave in but wouldn't let little Edgar take Allen as his last name so therefor became his middle name. John never liked Edgar if it wasent for his wife he would have kicked him out on the streets. Now with Edgars luck.. Frances also got Comsuption and was dying. When she died Edgar went off to Virgina State University. He didn't talk to his step-father for over a year. When he came home.. he found 2 twins upstairs. Now John had just inherited what would now be 7 million dollars but wanted to leave nothing to Edgar. So when he found the babies not more than a month old.. he asked John what thier names were. John said nevermind that, all you need to know is this is my 3.5 million dollar baby and this is my other 3.5 million dollar baby. Needless to say, Edgar had gotten kicked out. He also got cut out of John's will. Then his father's sister contacted him and wanted to make up for his mistake. She took him in and he fell madly in love with her charming young daughter. Who by the waay was his 1st cousin. When he felt his connection with Virgina (his cousin) was strong enough, he asked his aunt if he could marry her. Her reply was simply.."She's only 10 1/2. Wait until she is the acceptable age of 13. When she was 13, they wed. Everything was fine. She sang to him when he wrote most of his poems. He loved to hear songs and there were no radios so she was his only option. Not that he minded though, she had a beautiful voice. As all the other women in Edgar's life, she to got diagnosed with Comsuption. She died at the age of 18. He wanted to write a poem dedicated to her. At first it was to be named after her. But the more he thought about it, he changed it to "Annabell Lee". When she died he went into a depression. Just when his luck could be turned around, something awful happend. He was to ride the train to Baltimore then switch trains to go where he needed to be. When he got off at Baltimore, some men asked him to for drinks. He said "No, I have an allergy to alchol." THe men insisted that it would only be lemonade, so Edgar agreed. The true drink they gave him was 10% lemonade and 90% vodka. His allergic reaction kicked in and got him very drunk after only one drink. It was election day in Baltimore so they took him around to a bunch of different poll areas voting all the time under a different name. After they were done, they lleft him on his own again. He had missed his other train and was drunk as ever in the street. His allergies hit hard and when he fell he landed in a gutter. They buried him in the city of Baltimore, Maryland. That's the genaral life of Edgar Allen Poe. Sorry if ther are some mistakes here and there.. this is all I know.

Poe's parents were touring actors both died before he was 3 years old was taken into the home of John Allan a prosperous merchant in Richmond, Va., and baptized Edgar Allan Poe. Poe move in with his Aunt He married Virginia, who was not yet 14 years old. Virginia's death in January 1847 was a heavy blow, but Poe continued to write and lecture. Poe had died of "congestion of the brain in 1849.

Well first of all he didnt have rabies ok so get it through your head and yes he did marry his cusin and she was only 12 or 13 and he went to the University Of Virginia.
