A blackout kept the show from going on at the La Jolla Playhouse last night and left the UCSD campus dark for hours.

The power outage began shortly after 4 p.m. when a transformer blew, said San Diego fire officials. At least one of the two theatrical productions at the Playhouse scheduled for last night was canceled, the tragedy "Medea," after power was not restored by 6:30 p.m. for the 7 p.m. curtain.

Firefighters returned to campus at 6:45 when a faulty switch on an air-handling system caused the unit to smoke although there was no fire, officials said. By 7:30 p.m., much of the power had been restored by campus public works employees and San Diego Gas & Electric Co.
