An Air France jet carrying 347 people has made an emergency landing at the Tahiti Faa'a airport after crew reported a burning odour in the cabin, aviation officials say.

The Boeing 747, which was headed to Los Angeles and Paris, returned to Papeete, in French Polynesia, to land 40 minutes after takeoff. No one was injured in the incident, but several shaken passengers were treated by medical personnel, authorities said at a news conference.

The smell of burning rubber filled the cabin as the plane was taking off, and the persistent odour led the crew to switch off several electric circuits, such as the air conditioning and lighting, as a prevention. No flames or smoke were detected.

The airplane will be grounded until after an inspection to determine the cause of the incident, officials say.
